Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent increase in size and complicatedness of a device and to surely supply a desired amount of a reducing agent by varying the capacity of a reducing agent storeroom according to the storage amount of the reducing agent. SOLUTION: A reducing agent storing tank 12 is provided with a reducing agent storing container 121 built in an enclosure 120. As the reducing agent storing container 121 is formed of expansible material, the capacity is varied according to the amount of stored material and the internal pressure. A solid reducing agent in the reducing agent storing container 121 is heat-exchanged with cooling water and gasified. At that time, the pressure in the reducing agent storing container 121 is increased by a temperature rise due to heat exchange and gasification of the reducing agent, so that the gasified reducing agent (reducing gas) is force-fed to a reducing agent supply pipe through a reducing agent discharge port 122. The pressure of cooling water flowing through a gap 125 is applied to the reducing agent storing container 121 in addition to the shrinkage force of the container itself, so that even if the reducing agent storage amount is decreased, the pressure is not lowered. Accordingly, all of the reducing agent in the reducing agent storing tank 12 can be surely supplied to an exhaust pipe without a pump.

At the time of regeneration, the particulator materials captured by reversing the filter, etc., are removed.

When an air-fuel ratio of incoming exhaust is in a lean side, a nitrogen-oxide absorbent 10 which absorbs nitrogen oxide when an air-fuel ratio of incoming exhaust is in a lean side, and emits the nitrogen oxide being once absorbed when oxygen content in the incoming exhaust is lowered, is set up in each inner wall surface of the upstream end open cell 16u and the downstream end open cell 16d. When the nitrogen oxide should be emitted out of the NOX absorbent 10, the air-fuel ratio to be taken into the NOX absorbent 10 is temporarily set to a rich side.

When the exhaust switching valve 20 is positioned in forward flow, the exhaust pipe 10 and the exhaust pipe 12 are connected to each other as well as connecting the exhaust pipe 9 and the exhaust pipe 11 to each other, and exhaust gas flows from the inlet 30a to the outlet 30b in the catalyst converter 20. When the exhaust switching valve 20 is positioned in reverse flow, the exhaust pipe 10 and the exhaust pipe 11 are connected to each other as well as connecting the exhaust pipe 9 and the exhaust pipe 12 to each other, and exhaust gas flows from the outlet 30b to the inlet 30a in the catalyst converter 20.

SOLUTION: A catalyst 9 for reducing and cleaning a Nox discharged from an internal combustion engine 1 is attached to an exhaust passage 5. When the internal combustion engine 1 is in an accelerating operation state, a fuel is injected into a cylinder 2 from a fuel injection valve 8 at an earlier timing than a predetermined reference injection timing. An amount which is thermally decomposed, of the fuel earlier injected is greater than an amount which is thermally decomposed, of the fuel injected at the predetermined reference injection timing. The thermally decomposed fuel has high combustibility, Nox is easy to burn in the catalyst 9. Accordingly, as the reducing agent having high combustibility is supplied to the catalyst, a cleaning rate of exhaust gas in the catalyst can be kept high.
