    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel catalyst having a polymetallic sulfide phase containing at least one element selected from the elements of group IIIB includ ing sulfur, lanthanoids, and actinoids and group IVB and at least one element selected from the elements of group VIIB and group VIII. SOLUTION: A catalyst has a polymetallic sulfide phase containing at least one element selected from the elements of group IIIB including sulfur, lanthanide, and actinoids and group IVB and at least one element selected from the elements of group VIIB and group VIII. The catalyst can additionaly contain at least one element selected from the group consisting of the elements of group VB and group VIB. The catalyst preferably contains sulfur in an amount more than 40% of the stoichiometric amount of sulfur in the polymetallic sulfide of group IIIB, group IVB, group VIIB, and group VIII.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in a high yield by performing an oxidative coupling reaction of phenols in the presence of an organic fatty acid metal salt or a catalyst loaded with an inorganic salt and a specific hydrocarbon. SOLUTION: This method for producing biphenols is provided by performing an oxidative coupling reaction of (A) phenols (e.g.; 2,6-di-t-butylphenol) in the presence of (B) (i) preferably an organic fatty acid metal salt (copper naphthenate, iron naphthenate, etc.), consisting of a metal soap or (ii) a catalyst loaded with an inorganic salt [e.g.; alumina-loaded cupric(II)sulfate] and (C) an 8-15C branched aliphatic hydrocarbon or linear aliphatic hydrocarbon as a solvent (isododecane, n-undecane, etc.), at preferably 60-300 deg.C. In the above reaction, it is preferable to use 1-5 pt.wt. component (C) based on the component (A), and 0.005-80 mol.% component (B) (i) and 0.01-80 mole% component (B) (ii) based on the transition metal atom.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound, useful as an intermediate or the like for biotin or the like in an industrially advantageous way, by reacting a hexahydrofuro[3,4-d]imidazol-2,4-dione with a thioamide in the presence of hydrogen sulfide and a base. SOLUTION: This compound, i.e., a hexahydrothieno[3,4-d]imidazol-2,4-dione shown by formula II, useful as an intermediate or the like for biotin (vitamin H) or the like, is obtained by reacting a hexahydrofuro[3,4-d]imidazol-2,4-dione shown by formula I (R is an alkyl, an alkenyl, an aryl or an aralkyl, wherein each of these groups may be substituted with an alkyl, an alkoxyl, nitro or a halogen), e.g. cis-1,3-dibenzylhexahydrofuro[3,4-d]imidazol-2,4-dione, with a thioamide (e.g. thiobenzamide) in the presence of hydrogen sulfide and a basic substance (e.g. sodium acetate).

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method for esterified product(s), capable of greatly improving yield, decreasing waste disposal problems and production cost. SOLUTION: This method relates to the production of esterified products containing at least one kind of carboxylic ester from esterifying reactants comprising an alcohol, and an carboxylic acid or an carboxylic anhydride, its process consisting of (a) putting the esterifying reactants into a fixed bed type reactor under specified reaction conditions and (b) reacting the esterifying reactants in the fixed bed type reactor, (c) the above fixed bed type reactor containing a solid acid catalyst, and (d) the reaction conditions being controlled so that (i) the reactants and products can coexist in a gas-liquid two-phase equilibrium state in the fixed bed type reactor and (ii) at least one kind of reactant component forms one phase and at least one kind of product component forms the other phase.
