Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject amphipathic compound containing in the mole cule, oligopropenyl succinic half ester structure and (meth)allyl group, polymerizable with a vinyl compound, and useful as a paper manufacturing size, lubricant, coating material, polymerizable surfactant, crosslinking agent etc. SOLUTION: This compound has a structure of formula I R1 and R2 are each H or a group of [CH2 CH(CH3 )]n CH2 CH2 CH3 ((n) is 0-6); R3 is H or methyl; M is an alkali (alkaline earth) metal, ammonium or organic base}, formula II, etc., and is obtained, for example, by reaction between oligopropenylsuccinic acrid and (meth)allyl alcohol in the presence of a catalyst such as a mineral acid or organic acid under normal to higher pressures at 5-130 deg.C.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an allyl compound suitable as a raw material for plasticizers and synthetic resins having amphipathic effect, namely, both solubility to water and dispersibility, such as heat-resistant resins, and useful for a paper manufacturing additive having a combination of paper strengthening ability and sizing performance. SOLUTION: This compound, an alkenylsuccinic half ester compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are each H, a 1-23C alkyl, etc.; R1 +R2 is of 3-46C; R3 is H or methyl; M is H, an alkali metal, etc.) or formula II, is obtained by reaction of an alkenylsuccinic anhydride (e.g. derived from a 6-49C α-olefin such as 1-hexene) with an equivalent of an alcohol or methallyl alcohol in a solventless or organic solvent system under normal or higher pressures pref. at 10-100 deg.C for 30min to 20h. Besides, 10.0-90.0wt.% of the compound(s) of formula I and/or formula II is copolymerized with 10.0-99.9wt.% of a vinyl compound to obtain a polymeric compound bearing this compound on the side chain.
