    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light deflection element which obtains a large deflection angle compared with a conventional light deflection element using photonic crystal. SOLUTION: The light deflection element includes photonic crystal 18 having: a light-incident end surface 20 into which incident light L in propagated in a first direction is made incident; a reflective surface 22 which reflects the propagated light which is incident from the light-incident end surface 20 and is then propagated; and a light-emission end surface 24 from which the transmitted light reflected by the reflective surface 22 is emitted, as the emission light L out , in a second direction different from the first direction. In the light deflection element, the emission angle, which is formed by the second direction and the normal line of the light-emission end surface 24, changes in accordance with the light-incident angle, which is formed by the first direction and the normal line of the light-incident end surface 20 or by the wavelength of the incident light, due to twice super prism effects in the light-incident end surface 20 and the light-emission end surface 24, and thus the light-propagating direction is deflected.
