    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily and efficiently producing alcohols and esters in which a ratio of a specified stereoisomer (geometric isomer) is increased, by using an enzyme derived from a microorganism, without using enzymes derived from animals difficult to be massively supplied, nor enzymes derived from plants having problems in handling.
    SOLUTION: This method for obtaining the alcohol having a high steric purity of the specified geometric isomer comprises subjecting a geometrically isomeric alcohol mixture to half esterification with an acid anhydride in the presence of a hydrolase, or subjecting the mixture to transesterification reaction with a carboxylic acid ester used as a substitute for the acid anhydride, so as to obtain a half ester or an ester in which the ratio of the specified geometric isomer is increased, and then subjecting the half ester or the ester thus obtained to a hydrolyzing operation, etc., according to ordinary procedures.
