Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a method for producing an alkaline earth metal salicylate.
SOLUTION: Alkaline earth metal salicylates comprising varying percentages of dispersed alkaline earth metal carbonates can be produced by reacting an alkyl salicylic acid with a previously overbased alkaline earth metal sulfonate, e.g., calcium sulfonate. This method requires no filtration of an end product and thus is commercially preferred.

SOLUTION: The above additive is added in a liquid or powder state to a base oil in the composition. The highly basic additive in the lubricant composition acts as a metal protective agent and gives a cleaning action, a friction adjusting action and an acid neutralizing action on the above composition.
