PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide highly efficient long life charge separation by using a supermolecular complex utilizing π-π interaction. SOLUTION: The supramolecular complex is formed by π-π interaction between expanded viologen and porphyrin, wherein the expanded viologen is obtained by combining a heteroaryl with a heteroaryl through a connecting group having a π-electron conjugated system. By investigating photoelectron transfer reaction, electron transfer from a singlet excited state to the extended viologen is caused in the supermolecular complex and very long life charge separation longer than 1 msec is obtained. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide new fluorescent chemical compounds and methods of their use.SOLUTION: The fluorescent chemical compounds have a high selectivity for double stranded DNA over RNA and single stranded DNA. The fluorescent chemical compounds are dyeing agents that become fluorescent upon illumination and interaction with double stranded DNA, but exhibit reduced or no fluorescence in the absence of double stranded DNA. The fluorescent compounds can be used in a variety of biological applications to qualitatively or quantitatively assay DNA, even in the presence of RNA.
