Techniques to schedule downlink data transmission to a number of terminals in a wireless communication system. In one method, one or more sets of terminals are formed for possible data transmission, with each set including a unique combination of one or more terminals and corresponding to a hypothesis to be evaluated. One or more sub-hypotheses may further be formed for each hypothesis, with each sub-hypothesis corresponding to specific assignments of a number of transmit antennas to the one or more terminals in the hypothesis. The performance of each sub-hypothesis is then evaluated, and one of the evaluated sub-hypotheses is selected based on their performance. The terminal(s) in the selected sub-hypothesis are then scheduled for data transmission, and data is thereafter coded, modulated, and transmitted to each scheduled terminal from one or more transmit antennas assigned to the terminal.

For certain embodiments, a closed-loop technique may be applied, in which back-off factors used to calculate an effective SNR value fed back to a transmitter are adjusted. An open-loop rate control scheme is also presented in which a transmitter may select a data rate and number of streams based on whether transmitted packets are received in error at a receiver.

A system and method are provided for transmitting a rotating training sequence. A rotating training signal is generated in quadrature modulation transmitter. The rotating training signal includes training information sent via an in-phase (I) modulation path, as well as training information sent via a quadrature (Q) modulation path. The rotating training signal may be generated by initially sending training information via the I modulation path, and subsequently sending training information via the Q modulation path. The training information sent via the I modulation path may include a first symbol having a reference phase (e.g., 0 degrees or 180 degrees). Then, the training information sent via the Q modulation path would include a second symbol having a phase that is ±90 from the reference phase.

Channel estimates are determined for the multiple data streams and used to select a single code rate and multiple modulation schemes for the multiple data streams. The single code rate for all data streams is selected from among the set of supported code rates, and the modulation scheme for each data stream is selected from among the set of modulation schemes associated with the single code rate. Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate arrangement and transmission of control information in a wireless communication system. As described herein, a scheduled transmission of acknowledgement (ACK) signaling and channel quality information (CQI) signaling in a common subframe can be adapted for network implementations with limited link budget wherein ACK signaling is configured for repetition over multiple subframes to ensure a desired error rate level for the ACK signaling. To these ends, various aspects described herein facilitate modification of a coding rate applied to ACK signaling to be transmitted with data based on a repetition factor of the ACK signaling. Additionally and/or alternatively, various aspects described herein facilitate dropping of CQI signaling and transmission of only ACK signaling on subframes where CQI and ACK signaling are to be transmitted substantially simultaneously and ACK transmission is configured for repetition over multiple subframes.

Transmitter and receiver units for use in an OFDM communications system and configurable to support multiple types of services. The transmitter unit includes one or more encoders, a symbol mapping element, and a modulator. Each encoder receives and codes a respective channel data stream to generate a corresponding coded data stream. The symbol mapping element receives and maps data from the coded data streams to generate modulation symbol vectors, with each modulation symbol vector including a set of data values used to modulate a set of tones to generate an OFDM symbol. The modulator modulates the modulation symbol vectors to provide a modulated signal suitable for transmission. The data from each coded data stream is mapped to a respective set of one or more “circuits”. Each circuit can be defined to include a number of tones from a number of OFDM symbols, a number of tones from a single OFDM symbol, all tones from one or more OFDM symbols, or some other combination of tones. The circuits can have equal size or different sizes. Different circuits can be used for full rate data (e.g., active speech) and low rate data (e.g., silence periods).
