A portable endoscope tester determines specific properties of an endoscope optical system and enables comparisons between individual endoscopes to be made. The tester includes a holder for receiving and aligning an endoscope and a target attachable to the holder. The target is held in a plane normal to the optical axis of the endoscope when received in the holder. Opaque indicia indicative of the optical properties of the endoscope appears on the target and include a central disk with either a pinhole or a cross formed at the center, a plurality of field circles including an inner and outer bold ring, an inner and outer group of resolution targets arranged at respective clock positions, each resolution target comprising a plurality of parallel lines of different width and spacing, and rectangular grid centered on the optical axis. Depth of field, magnification, clarity, resolution, tilted de-centered optical color fringing, field and direction of view, coma and fall-off of resolution from the center to the edge can be detected.

Method for quantifying optical properties of the human lens. The present invention includes the application of fiberoptic, OMA-based instrumentation as an in vivo diagnostic tool for the human ocular lens. Rapid, noninvasive and comprehensive assessment of the optical characteristics of a lens using very modest levels of exciting light are described. Typically, the backscatter and fluorescence spectra (from about 300- to 900-nm) elicited by each of several exciting wavelengths (from about 300- to 600-nm) are collected within a few seconds. The resulting optical signature of individual lenses is then used to assess the overall optical quality of the lens by comparing the results with a database of similar measurements obtained from a reference set of normal human lenses having various ages. Several metrics have been identified which gauge the optical quality of a given lens relative to the norm for the subject's chronological age. These metrics may also serve to document accelerated optical aging and/or as early indicators of cataract or other disease processes.

An electromagnetic radiation source, such as an arc lamp, is located at a point displaced from the optical axis of a concave toroidal reflecting surface. The concave primary reflector focuses the radiation from the source at an off-axis image point that is displaced from the optical axis. The use of a toroidal reflecting surface enhances the collection efficiency into a small target, such as an optical fiber, relative to a spherical reflecting surface by substantially reducing aberrations caused by the off-axis geometry. A second concave reflector is placed opposite to the first reflector to enhance further the total flux collected by a small target.

Experimental studies of a nonlinear interface have indicated that saturation of the nonlinear refractive index may play a critical role in controlling the transition from total internal reflection to nearly total transmission. Numerical simulations of the behavior of a saturated nonlinear interface confirm that saturation effects can dramatically improve transmitted beam shape and switching quality.
