THE ESTERIFICATION OF POLYCARBOXYLIC ACID WITH A ALKYLENE GLYCOL IS DESCRIBED UNDER CONDITIONS OF DIRECT ESTERIFICATION WHEREIN THE POLYCARBOXYLIC ACID IS ESTERIFIED WITH AN ALKYLENE GLYCOL IN THE PRESENCE OF A COMPOUND OF THE FORMULA
M-OOC-R-N(-(CH2)M-OH)-(CH2)N-OH
WHEREIN M IS AN ALKALINE METAL SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF SODIUM AND POTASSIUM, OR A TERTIARY ALKYL AMINE, R IS CH2, AND M AN N ARE WHOLE NUMBERS FROM 2 TO 4 WHEREIN THE NUMBER CAN BE EQUAL OR UNEQUAL ONE TO THE OTHER.

When from about 0.7 percent to about 3 percent of organic phosphites are coated on nylon fiber, or are added to the polymer prior to spinning, improved dyefastness is achieved compared to an untreated dyed nylon fiber when this fiber is exposed to ozone.

A CATIONIC-DYEABLE POLYAMIDE, POLYMERIZED FROM WAMINOCARBOXYLIC ACIDS OR THEIR LACTAMS, OF IMPROVED PHYSICAL PROPERTIES CAN BE MADE BY USING FROM 0.30 TO 0.85 MOLE PERCENT (BASED ON THE POLYAMIDE) OF THE SODIUM SALT OF A DIACID SUCH AS 5-SULFOISOPHTHALIC ACID AND 0.10 TO 0.65 MOLE PERCENT OF AN N-SULFOALKYL ALKYLDIAMINE SUCH AS N-(4-SULFOBUTYL)HEXAMETHYLENEDIAMINE, OR N(2-SULFOETHYL)M-XYLYLENEDIAMINE. A POLYAMIDE RESULTS CONTAINING THE RESPECTIVELY SAME NUMBER OF SULFO GROUPS, BUT WITH LESS DILUENT AND CONSEQUENTLY HAVING A HIGHER MELTING POINT. THE DIACID CAN BE A SULFONATE DERIVATIVE OF A PHTHALIC ACID, OR OF FLUORENE, ETC. THE DIAMINE CAN BE A SULFONATE DERIVATIVE OF HEXAMETHYLENEDIAMINE, METAZYLYLENEDIAMINE, ETC. THE USE OF THE COMBINATION OF ADDITIVES ELIMINATES THE NECESSITY OF ADDING A DIAMIE OR DICARBOXYLIC ACID TO ACHIEVE FULL POLYMERIZATION.

CATIONIC DYEABLE POLYCAPROLACTAM IS PREPARED BY ADDING FROM 0.5 TO 2.0 MOLE PERCENT OF N-SULFOBUTYLHEXAMETHYLENEDIAMINE OR THE ALKALI SALT THEREOF WITH PREFERABLY 0.5 TO 2.6 MOLE PERCENT (ON TOTAL MOLES OF LACTAM) OF AZELAIC ACID, THE EXCESS OF FIACID OVER DIAMINE BEING PREFERABLY SUCH THAT THE POLYAMIDE HAS ZERO TO 80 MORE EQUIVALENTS TO ACID OVER AMINE PER 106 GRAMS OF POLYMER. ALSO, LESS THAN 30 EQUIVALENT OF AMINO END GROUPS ARE PREFERRED. IN THE PLACE OF AZELATE ACID MAY BE USED AN ALKALI SALT OF AZELIC ACID SUCH AS LITHIUM HYDROGEN AZELATE, OR MIXTURE OF IDSODIUM AZELATE WITH AZELAIC AID. THE DIALKYL ESTER SUCH AS DIMETHYL AZELATE OF AZELAIC ACID CAN ALSO BE USED. IN PLACE OF AZELAIC ACID OR ITS EQUIVALENTS AS MENTIONED ABOVE, THE SAME NUMBER OF EQUIVALENT OF DIMER ACID, FORMED BY DIMERIZATION OF OLEIC ACID, CAN NE USED. ALKALI CATION MAY ALSO BE ADDED BY ADDING ALKALI OXIDE, HYDROXIDE, CARBON OR BICARBONATE.
