Abstract:
The present invention consists of an aluminum alloy having a high fatigue strength which is particularly suited for use in the fabrication of printing plates for offset lithography. The alloy contains from 0.2 to 0.75% magnesium, from 0.45 to 0.7% copper, from 0.1 to 0.7% iron and up to 0.3% silicon. The alloy, when processed according to the process of the present invention possesses a uniquely high fatigue strength.
Abstract:
An extrusion die in a container wherein a plate is recessed in the die and is positioned between a billet to be extruded and the face of the die. On at least one of the adjacent faces of the die and plate there is a knurled surface. The region formed between the plate and the die forms a passageway for lubricant to the extrusion die so that the lubricant may aid in the extrusion of a billet. There is a passageway in the die for the introduction of lubricant to the area between the plate and the die. The knurled surface has 10 to 50 grooves per inch, and the grooves have a depth of 0.0005 to 0.02 inches. A seal may be used to seal the passageway from the interior of the container. The die and plate may be of the same metal. The lubricant conduit in the die may have an enlarged cross-section prior to joining the passageway region between the plate and the die.
Abstract:
A method for extruding high strength, heat treatable aluminum alloys is disclosed which comprises providing a homogenized cast alloy billet, conducting a first hot extrusion of said billet to a reduction in area of from 20 - 75%, conducting a second hot extrusion at the solutionizing temperature of the alloy, and quenching said billet after said second extrusion. The method of this invention is particularly useful for the processing of Alloys 2014, 2024 and 7075, and eliminates the need of conducting a separate solution heat treatment after the extrusion operation is completed.
Abstract:
The present invention resides in an improved molten metal filter and a method of preparing same and a method of filtering molten metal therethrough. The filter is an open cell ceramic foam material having a plurality of interconnected voids surrounded by a web of said ceramic.
