摘要: Reactive foils and their uses are provided as localized heat sources useful, for example, in ignition, joining and propulsion. An improved reactive foil is preferably a freestanding multilayered foil structure made up of alternating layers selected from materials that will react with one another in an exothermic and self-propagating reaction. Upon reacting, this foil supplies highly localized heat energy that may be applied, for example, to joining layers, or directly to bulk materials that are to be joined. This foil heat-source allows rapid bonding to occur at room temperature in virtually any environment (e.g., air, vacuum, water, etc.). If a joining material is used, the foil reaction will supply enough heat to melt the joining materials, which upon cooling will form a strong bond, joining two or more bulk materials.

摘要: An apparatus and method is disclosed for drawing continuous metallic wire having a first diameter to a metallic fiber having a reduced second diameter. A feed mechanism moves the wire at a first linear velocity. A laser beam heats a region of the wire to an elevated temperature. A draw mechanism draws the heated wire at a second and greater linear velocity for providing a drawn metallic fiber having the reduced second diameter.

摘要: A method of making a multi-layer plain bearing comprises roll-bonding a relatively soft aluminum-tin alloy to a harder aluminum-based bearing substrate and then roll-bonding the composite to a steel backing. Following heat treatment conventional for reticulation of the aluminum-tin alloy the surface is machined to give a precise overall bearing thickness of which the aluminum-tin overlay is in the range of 0.01-0.10 mm, typical of an overlay but having greater fatigue strength and war resistance than conventional electro-deposited materials. Alternatively, the overlay substrate and backing strips may be roll-bonded simultaneously.

摘要: A method of producing enhanced radial texture in zirconium alloy tubing suitable for use in forming cladding for nuclear fuel rods is provided. The tubing production method described herein employs a combination of mechanical expansion and heat treatment steps in the final stage of tubing formation to produce a single peak radial texture in the tubing, thereby imparting enhanced resistance to pellet-cladding-interaction to the finished tubing. The tubing is preferably processed to a diameter within less than about 10 to 20% of the desired final diameter, annealed, and expanded less than about 10 to 20% to the desired final diameter, thereby producing a unique radial texture in the finished tubing. In an alternative method, the finally expanded tubing is subjected to a final recrystallization anneal to produce a significantly enhanced split radial texture.

摘要: The method of the invention relates to the manufacturing of tubes of a continuously cast or the like billet by means of cold working, wherein the temperature of the material rises to the recrystallization range due to the influence of the deformation resistance. The method is particularly related to the further working of billets made of non-ferrous metals such as copper, aluminum, nickel, zirconium and titanium, as well as of their alloys.
