A system and method is provided for determining the channel to which a video wave receiver is tuned. The system includes an RF signal source connected to the antenna input of the video wave receiver, a frequency control stage that determines the signal frequencies generated by the RF signal source and a system and advance control stage to appropriately program operation of the frequency control stage. The RF signal source is conditioned by the system and advance control stage and the frequency control stage to output signals such that the fundamental or one of the harmonics when combined with the video carrier of a corresponding channel results in a signal having a predetermined frequency. The RF signal source is successively advanced to output a set of predetermined frequencies, corresponding to each of the receivable channels to which the video receiver is tunable. The system includes a detector/receiver arranged to monitor the video signal of the video receiver to detect the predetermined frequency resulting from the combined signal from the RF signal source and a video carrier to which the video receiver is tuned. The RF signal source is stepped through a predetermined set of frequencies corresponding to each receivable channel and the system outputs a signal denoting the received channel to which the video receiver is tuned when the predetermined frequency is detected by the detector/receiver.

A system for remotely monitoring or determining the channel to which a voltage tunable receiver (or CATV converter) has been tuned includes an encoder for measuring the magnitude of the tuning voltage applied to the tuning section of the receiver and for generating a channel representative digital code in response to the tuning voltage. The digital code thus generated is compatible with remotely located monitoring equipment, and represents the number of the channel to which the receiver is tuned. Since the tuning voltage is not linearly related to the channel number of the station being received, the encoder utilizes a read-only memory or the like for storing a coded representation relating the channel number to the tuning voltage. In a preferred embodiment, the coded representations are sequentially stored as tuning voltage representations in address locations of the memory corresponding to the respective channel numbers. The read-only memory locations are sequentially addressed, and the tuning voltage representations are compared with the amplitude of the tuning voltage currently being applied to the receiver. When the value of the tuning voltage representation equals or exceeds the amplitude of the tuning voltage, the sequential addressing is terminated and the address of the last accessed memory location is stored to provide a coded indication of the channel number of the station being received.

A system for monitoring the channel to which a remotely located voltage tunable receiver or converter is tuned includes a comparator for comparing the magnitude of the tuning voltage with an internally generated reference voltage to determine the channel number. The reference voltage is generated by a counter driving a linear digital-to-analog converter. The output of the digital-to-analog converter is modified with an analog function generator to provide a piecewise linear approximation of the receiver tuning voltage versus channel number characteristic. A window comparator is utilized to compare the output of the function generator with the tuning voltage and to stop the counter and transfer the contents of the counter to an output circuit when the magnitude of the reference voltage approaches that of the tuning voltage. The contents of the counter at the time the counter is interrupted is indicative of the channel number of the station being received.
