    Abstract: An improved power steering system for automotive vehicles employing a compact integral gear box having a variable ratio steering output coupled with a torque-matching geared variable ratio interconnection between the steering output shaft and the source of power assist to provide substantially improved oncenter turn rate capability, improved on-center feel, and increased torque availability in the parking range. Substantially increased steering system efficiency is provided while, at the same time, a low-cost gear construction is incorporated.
