Abstract: A coated glass article includes a glass article comprising a glass having a surface. The surface has an adhesion promoting region comprising a nanostructure formed at the surface of the glass. The adhesion promoting region is constructed of materials that are the same as one or more constituents of a glass composition of the glass. The coated glass article further includes a coating disposed on the adhesion promoting region formed at the surface of the glass. The coating incudes one or more polymer coating materials. The adhesion promoting region improves adhesion of the coating to the glass while also eliminating the use of titania or other adhesion promoting compounds that can adversely affect the optical properties of the coatings.

Abstract: A method for making an antimicrobial composite film can include forming a first coating layer by applying a first coating material on a substrate and forming a second coating layer by applying a second coating material on the first coating layer. The first coating material can comprise a first resin. The second coating material can comprise an antimicrobial material in a second resin or a dispersion. The first coating material can have a lower concentration of the antimicrobial material than the second coating material. The first and second coating layers can cooperatively define a composite film. The antimicrobial material can be asymmetrically dispersed in the composite film such that the antimicrobial material is concentrated closer to the outer surface of the composite film than to the inner surface of the composite film.

Abstract: An antimicrobial polymer composition comprises from about 5 wt % to about 30 wt % of a copper-containing material, from about 5 wt % to about 30 wt % of an ionic liquid, and from 60 wt % to 90 wt % of a thermoplastic polymer. An antimicrobial polymer article comprises from 0.1 wt % to about 30 wt % of a copper-containing material, from about 0.1 wt % to about 20 wt % of an ionic liquid, and from about 50 wt % to about 99.8 wt % of a thermoplastic polymer. Methods of making an antimicrobial polymer can comprise feeding an antimicrobial polymer composition and an another thermoplastic polymer into a forming apparatus. Methods of making an antimicrobial polymer article comprises feeding a mixture comprising copper-containing material from about 0.1 wt % to about 30 wt %, an ionic liquid from about 0.1 wt % to about 20 wt %, and a thermoplastic polymer into a forming apparatus.
