Abstract: A composition that includes one or more compounds represented by the formula wherein R1 and R2 are same or different and are the residue of an alkyl group having more than 10 carbon atoms wherein the composition has a viscosity (Kv100) from 2 to 300 at 100° C. as determined by ASTM D-445, and a viscosity index (VI) from −100 to 300 as determined by ASTM D-2270. The disclosure also relates to a process for producing the composition, a lubricating oil base stock and lubricating oil containing the composition, and a method for improving oxidative stability of a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil containing the composition.

Abstract: A low transition temperature mixture (LTTM) or deep eutectic solvent (DES) useful as a lubricating oil base stock and lubricating oil including a eutectic mixture of at least a first component and at least a second component. The at least first component comprises a hydrogen bond acceptor and the at least second component comprises a hydrogen bond donor. The eutectic mixture includes an equilibrium phase between the at least first component and the at least second component. The equilibrium phase does not exhibit physical characteristics of the at least first component in an unmixed state and the at least second component in an unmixed state. The at least first component and the at least second component form an intermolecular interaction between each other sufficient to prevent crystallization of the at least first component and the at least second component in the eutectic mixture. The eutectic mixture is a liquid at 20° C.

Abstract: Provided is a lubricant base stock, a lubricating oil including the lubricant base stock and a method for improving viscosity temperature performance or viscosity index of an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with the lubricating oil. The lubricant base stock includes one or more liquid crystals represented by the formula: R1-(A)m-Y—(B)n—R2 wherein R1 and R2 are the same or different and are a substituted or unsubstituted, alkyl or alkoxy group having from 0 to 24 carbon atoms; A and B are the same or different and are a cycloaliphatic group or aromatic group, provided at least one of A and B is an aromatic group; Y is a covalent bond, —CH2-CH2-, —CH═CH—, —C≡C—, —OCOO—, —COO—, —CO—, —CSO—, —CSS—, —CS—, —O—, —S—, —SO—, —SO2-, —CH2O—, —OCH2O—, —NO—, —ONO2, —COOH, —OH, or —C≡N; and m and n are independently 0, 1, 2 or 3. The lubricant base stock has a kinematic viscosity of 2 cSt to 28 cSt at 40° C., and 1 cSt to 12 cSt at 100° C.

Abstract: This disclosure provides a process for producing vinylidene dimer derivatives by subjecting one or more vinylidene dimers and one or more carbonyl-containing compounds to a carbonyl-ene reaction, optionally in the presence of a catalyst, to produce one or more vinylidene dimer derived alcohols. This disclosure also provides a process for producing vinylidene dimer derivatives by reacting one or more vinylidene dimers with one or more carbonyl-containing compounds, optionally in the presence of a catalyst, to produce one or more vinylidene dimer derived alcohols. This disclosure further provides vinylidene dimer derivatives (e.g., vinylidene dimer derived alcohols and esters) produced by these processes. This disclosure still further provides for hydrogenating/reacting the vinylidene dimer derived alcohols with acids or anhydrides to produce vinylidene dimer derived esters. This disclosure yet further relates to lubricating ester oil base stocks, and lubricating oils containing the lubricating ester oil base stocks.
