Abstract:
An automatic slack adjuster for vehicle brakes that automatically and continuously compensates for the wear of the brake linings and does not depend on a fixed reference point on the vehicle chassis for actuation of the adjustment mechanism. The present invention has a control arm integral with a ring journalled in the braking lever, an actuating piston rod to rotate the braking lever and actuate the vehicle brake and a flexible strut member extending between and rigidly connected to the piston rod and a transverse surface at the outer end of the control arm. The flexible strut member allows the outer end of the control arm to act as a reference point but allows it to float during operation of the braking lever and returns the reference point to its desired location upon retraction of the braking lever and piston rod.
Abstract:
An improved two-way torque limiting coupling (10) of the type utilizing a single helical coil clutch (18) and an automatic slack adjuster utilizing same is provided. The coupling provides a driving connection between a first (12) and a second (14) rotatable adjacent members. The first member includes a bore (24) opening to an end (20) in which one end of coil clutch is received in interference fit to define an internal clutch interface (34) and the other member defines an annular outer periphery (26) about which the other end of the coil clutch is received in an interference fit to define an external clutch interface (36). For the direction of rotation tending to expand the coil clutch (18), the coupling will slip at the external interface (36) which is the low maximum torque transfer direction of rotation for that interface and for the direction of rotation tending to contract the coil clutch (18), the coupling will slip at the internal interface (34) which is the low maximum torque transfer direction of rotation for that interface.
Abstract:
An improved S-cam (100) for expanding internal shoe (20) drum brakes (10) is provided. The working surfaces (116) of the S-cam are provided at their ends with an extremely high rise/low mechanical advantage portion (122) providing a warning ramp to indicate to the operator that brake relining is required and to minimize the possibility of cam flip.
Abstract:
A slack adjuster for vehicle brakes that utilizes an adjustment means actuated by the brake piston rod comprising a load biased rotatable worm shaft and clutch actuated by a reciprocable rack. The piston rod operated by the vehicle brake pedal is operatively connected to the slack adjuster lever and housing through a clevis pivotally mounted intermediate its ends to the lever and connected through a second pivotal connection on the free end of the clevis with an actuating rod that is connected to the reciprocable rack through a lost motion connection.
