Fluorinated solvents are used for the application of fluorinated waxes to skis without impairing the physico-mechanical characteristics of the ski sole. The fluorinated waxes are applied to skis in the form of a spray or an aerosol allowing for quick and effective application of high melting point fluorinated waxes onto ski soles. The fluorinated solvent may be one or more linear, branched, cross-linked, or cyclic perfluorinated compounds having a boiling temperature ranging between 30° C. and 150° C., and preferably between 50° C. and 100° C. Fluorinated waxes can be dissolved in such solvents, and the mixtures of fluorinated waxes and solvents are stored in spray cans and are sprayed onto the ski soles as aerosols or as sprays.

The present invention concerns a lubricant for improving the gliding properties of skis and its application to skiing. The lubricant possesses an elevated molecular weight but has a very low melting point. Furthermore, the lubricant does not crystallize easily and thus remains oily or waxy also at low temperatures. The lubricant is constituted of four perfluorinated chains attached to a hydrogenated core in a symmetrical arrangement in such a manner that a tetra-substituted derivative or tetrakis derivative is formed according to the following formula ##STR1## wherein each R.sub.x group can be the same or different and comprises a perfluorinated alkyl group.

A polymeric composition is provided comprising high molecular weight (HMW) or ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) polyethylene containing fluorographite powder. The composition can be moldable into a ski sole or other article and provides a surface exhibiting an extremely low coefficient of friction. Skis and ski soles exhibiting extremely low coefficients of friction and extremely low surface tensions and made of the polyethylene/fluorographite compositions are also provided. In addition, methods of making compositions of HMW or UHMW polyethylene mixed with fluorographite, and ski soles made of such compositions are also provided.

In the method for the removal of alkalies from glass surfaces and articles by reaction with hydrofluoric acid, the glass surface is contacted with a gas stream containing a compound of fluorine and silicium, preferably silicium tetrafluoride, and water in a predetermined ratio, the treatment being carried out at high temperature. Depending on the treatment conditions, a deposition of finely divided silica onto the glass surface under treatment can be obtained.
