A magnetic disk device and a flying slider, having a magnetic head for reading and writing information, are disclosed. The magnetic head slider includes flying pads of a stepped configuration for flying the slider, and each of the flying pads has a flat surface portion and a step surface recessed from this flat surface portion through a microscopic step. Microscopic projections are formed on the step surface. The height of the microscopic projections are higher than or substantially equal to the height of the step. With this construction, the slider is less liable to be turned to lean forward because of the provision of the microscopic projections, and beside a front edge of the step surface will not damage a magnetic disk surface. A variation of the flying height can be reduced by a negative pressure produced at the rear side of each microscopic projection. Therefore, there can be provided the magnetic disk device having high reliability and a large capacity.

Provided is a magnetic head slider apparatus that can minimize a change in a roll angle caused by an impact force even with a submount mounted on a side surface thereof and achieve steady flying with the roll angle minimized. A dimple position and a pressure center position of a lifting force are moved in a slider width direction to thereby align a center of mass of a slider having a submount including a laser diode mounted on a side surface thereof, the dimple position, and the pressure center position of the lifting force with each other. This provides a magnetic head slider and a suspension thereof, and a magnetic disk drive apparatus offering higher recording density and higher reliability.

Fluctuations of a positive pressure generated toward the leading edge with respect to the dimple are thus suppressed when the piezoelectric element is deformed.

A magnetic layer in lands or patterns in the discrete track medium or the patterned medium is formed into a cylindrical shelly or spherical shelly shape with a uniform thickness. Moreover, a height of cylindrical shelly land or a height of spherical shelly land is changed between 5 nm and 30 nm according to radial positions. Thus, an effect is achieved for providing a magnetic recording medium and a magnetic disk apparatus which are excellent in realizing higher recording density and higher reliability.
