Abstract: Disclosed herein are sliders that include at least one leading-edge pocket, data storage devices comprising such sliders, and methods of manufacturing such sliders. The at least one leading-edge pocket increases the amount of gas flowing into the leading edge area of the ABS, which can improve the performance of the slider in low-pressure environments, such as sealed helium data storage devices. The at least one leading-edge pocket can have a variety of shapes, sizes, and features to achieve the desired slider performance (e.g., fly height, stability, etc.) in low-pressure environments.

Abstract: A perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) writer is configured to magnetically record data on a rotatable disk surface. The PMR writer including a pole tip, side shields, an air-bearing surface (ABS) region, a yoke region comprising Silicon Dioxide (SiO2), side gaps and a plurality of throat regions. The side gaps are arranged respectively between the pole tip and the side shields and include SiO2. A side gap width of the plurality of throat regions increases with a side shield throat height above the ABS region for each of the throat regions. The side gap width has a different width variation in each of the throat regions.

Abstract: An apparatus comprises a slider configured for writing data to and reading data from a magnetic recording medium and for heat-assisted magnetic recording. The slider comprises a heater configured to receive an AC signal and to cause oscillation in a spacing between the slider and the medium, and a contact sensor situated on the slider and configured to produce a DC response signal. A detector is coupled to the slider and configured to measure an amplitude of a spike in the DC response signal, calculate a ratio between the spike amplitude and an amplitude of the DC response signal, and detect contact between the slider and the medium in response to the ratio exceeding a predetermined threshold.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a hard disk drive slider having an extended three-dimensional air-bearing surface (ABS). The slider has an ABS and a back surface opposite the ABS, where at least a portion of the back surface defines a plane (i.e., if the back surface is substantially flat, the back surface itself defines the plane). Defined herein is an ABS function, which describes the characteristics of a portion of the ABS in a two-dimensional plane made by taking a cross-section of the slider perpendicular to the plane defined by the at least a portion of the back surface. The cross-section of the slider taken perpendicular to the plane has an ABS function that is a multi-valued function, which is defined herein as a relation for which, for at least one possible input value along the selected axis in the plane, the relation evaluates to two or more distinct nonzero values.

Abstract: A process for lapping a row of head sliders involves fixing the row to a lapping tool fixture, actuating each of multiple force pins to set each head slider for lapping to a respective target wedge angle, and simultaneously lapping accordingly. Each target wedge angle may be achieved by applying a respective torque to a compliant elastomer between each force pin and corresponding head slider, to transfer a pressure gradient corresponding to the torque to the corresponding head slider. Such torques may be applied through at least two wedge angle flexures interconnecting a rotatable box structure and a fixed back wall of a lapping tool, wherein the flexures virtually intersect at and define an axis of rotation about which the torques are applied. The process may further involve actuating each force pin to set each head slider for lapping to a respective reader target stripe height, and simultaneously lapping accordingly.
