Abstract: A universal serial bus (USB) hub includes detection circuits for a D− and a D+ connection of a USB port and a control circuit. The control circuit is configured to disable, detection circuits, respective impedances. After disabling the respective impedances, the USB hub is further configured to detect, at the detection circuits, respective values from the D+ connection and the D− connection. The USB hub is further configured to, based upon the respective values, switch the USB port between a device port configuration and a host port configuration.

Abstract: An apparatus includes two PHY circuits, each including a PHY transmitter circuit and connected to a universal serial bus (USB)-C connector. The apparatus includes a USB circuit to issue a receiver detect signal through one of the PHY transmitters circuit to the USB-C connector, issue another receiver detect signal through the other PHY transmitter circuit to the USB-C connector, determine which receiver detect signal resulted in a termination in a USB-C element, and consequently determine an orientation of a USB plug connected between the apparatus and the USB-C element.

The processor may be further caused to detect a connection to the dock. The processor may be further caused to determine whether a candidate port to which the connection is made is the priority port. The processor may be further caused to, based on a determination that the candidate port is the priority port, recover power from other ports and advertise power capabilities of the priority port to a USB element connecting to the dock.
