摘要:
A fiber having increased cut resistance is made from a fiber-forming polymer and a hard filler having a Mohs Hardness Value greater than about 3. The filler is included in an amount of about 0.05% to about 20% by weight. In preferred embodiments, the fiber-forming polymer is poly(ethylene terephthalate) or a liquid crystalline polyester comprising monomer units derived from 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. Preferred fillers include tungsten and alumina.

摘要:
High to ultrahigh polyester compositions comprising monomer units derived from 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, 4,4'-bibenzoic acid and ethylene glycol are useful as fibers and molding resins when the mole ratio of 4,4'-bibenzoic acid to 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid is from about 60:40 to about 40:60, and especially when the two diacids are included in about equimolar amounts. These compositions yield fiber with excellent tensile properties, both at room temperature and at elevated temperatures. When these compositions are melt spun at a relatively low melt temperature and high draw down ratio, fibers with excellent tensile properties are obtained without a subsequent drawing step.
摘要:
The tensile modulus of fibers made from liquid crystalline polymers comprising 6-oxy-2-naphthoate and 4-oxybenzoate monomer units that have been heat treated can be increased by applying and then releasing a stress at room temperature in the range of about 25% to about 90% of the tensile strength of the heat treated fiber to yield a "pre-stressed" fiber.

Fibers and yarns of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and PET copolymers with a sheath/filamentous core microstructure are formed from unoriented and non crystalline "as spun" source fibers and yarns by drawing to high draw ratios in one step. Fibers and yarns with the sheath/filamentous core microstructure are stiffer than commercial PET fibers. Fibers and yarns with the sheath/filamentous core microstructure may be annealed and relaxed to increase their dimensional stability without loss of the sheath/filamentous core microstructure.
