A cartridge library comprises plural cells for accommodating therein a cartridge of information storage media and a tape drive which transduces information relative when a cartridge is loaded into the drive. A cartridge loader (also known as the cartridge transport assembly) is mounted to the drive assembly for picking a selected cartridge from one of the cells and for inserting the selected cartridge into a cartridge slot in the drive. A pair of cartridge engagement arms are mounted to the carriage second section for selectively partially inserting the data cartridge into the drive assembly. The cartridge transport assembly further includes a secondary cartridge contact member (forming part of a “flipper assembly”) which operates in response to movement of the engagement arm to moves the selected cartridge from partial insertion to full insertion into the drive. Also, the secondary cartridge contact member serves as a stop surface when the cartridge is ejected from the drive.

The cartridge engaging member (1428) is a cantilevered arm having a distal end extending in a direction into which the cartridge is insertable into the cell, and has a cartridge engaging profile whereby, when a cartridge (C) is properly inserted into the cell, the cantilevered arm does not extend beyond a reference plane but when the cartridge is not properly inserted the cantilevered arm deflects beyond a reference plane. The magazine wall has an arcuate shape, and has plural cell partitions for defining plural cells, with mouths of the plural cells being angularly arranged about an axis (100). The magazine wall has spaced apart ribs (1460) with a cartridge window (1664) formed between adjacent ribs. In addition, the magazine wall has at least one handle fin (1470) extending therefrom. A trough (848) is formed at a first edge of the magazine-receiving aperture of the library frame accommodates a semi-cylindrical protrusion (1476) on the magazine. Upon insertion the semi-cylindrical protrusion pivots in the trough. The library frame has a lock (860) proximate the second edge of the magazine-receiving aperture for locking the magazine into the magazine-receiving aperture.

An entry/exit port cartridge overinsertion protection assembly (450) is provided to prevent overinsertion of a media cartridge loaded into the entry/exit port module. The entry/exit port cartridge overinsertion protection assembly includes a cartridge restraint member (452) which is pivoted away from a cartridge restraint position by a cartridge transport device (92) when the transport device seeks to obtain or deposit a cartridge at the entry/exit port. A cartridge restraint assembly (300) is also provided to guard against overinsertion of a cartridge stored in a cartridge magazine. The cartridge restraint assembly which guards against overinsertion of a cartridge stored in a cartridge magazine is responsive to movement of a library door. Upon movement of the door from a door closed position to a door open position, the cartridge restraint assembly responsively moves into a cartridge restraint position to prevent over positioning of a cartridge situated in the cartridge magazine.

An automated analyzer for performing multiple diagnostic assays includes multiple modules in which aspects of the assay are performed on fluid samples contained in reaction receptacles. The analyzer includes stations for automatically preparing a sample, pre-heating the sample, incubating the sample, performing an analyte isolation procedure, and ascertaining the presence of a target analyte. A receptacle transporting system moves reaction receptacles from one station to the next. A method for performing an assay includes an automated process for isolating and amplifying a target analyte. The process is performed by moving each of a plurality of reaction receptacles containing a solid support material and a fluid sample between stations for pre-heating and incubating the contents of the reaction receptacle and for separating the target analyte bound to the solid support from the fluid sample. An amplification reagent is added to the analyte after the separation step and before incubation.
