摘要: In a method of bonding a mirror to a rigid backing by means of a solvent-based adhesive, the solvent vapour from the bond line is extracted by interposing a porous layer between the mirror and the backing and extracting the solvent vapour through the porous layer by suction.Apparatus for this purpose includes first and second work stations 2,4 for supporting a rigid sheet of material 8, and means 39,40,44,46,56 for advancing the sheet from one station to the other through a third station equipped with means 34 for dispensing liquid adhesive on the sheet as it passes through. The support surface 16 of the second station is gas-permeable 18 and this station also includes a flexible and substantially gas-impermeable lid 22 adapted to close over a sheet lying on the support surface and means 21 for sucking gas through the support surface from the space between the lid and the support surface whereby to evacuate the space.Also provided is a laminate of a mirror and a rigid backing with a porous layer of fibrous material between the mirror and the backing, and a method of bonding a mirror to a rigid backing by means of a foam-forming composition which expands and sets to form a solid foam which bonds the mirror to the backing.

摘要: In a shockproof mirror of the kind comprising a glass or plastics sheet or film backed with a reflecting layer which is bonded to a flexible and resiliently compressible foam pad by means of which the whole is intended to be glued to a substantially rigid support structure, e.g. wall or ceiling, by means of an adhesive composition containing a volatile liquid component, degradative attack of the foam and/or of the adhesive bond between the foam and the reflecting layer by said volatile adhesive component is reduced or prevented by heat bonding a substantially impermeable polyurethane skin to the exposed face of the foam.

摘要: Manufacture of an article incorporating a thermosetting-powder surface-coating includes bonding a component of the article to the coating by contacting the melted powder with the component before curing takes place, and maintaining it in contact through curing. In a glass architectural panel, an aluminium foil is bonded in this way to a polyester/triglycidyl-isocyanurate powder coating on the silane-primed back of the facing glass; the metal foil is backed by a plastics or rubber open-cell material to enhance resistance of the glass to impact, and also, together with the foil, resistance to thermal shock. The coating includes pigmentation to give the effect of colored glass, or is clear to allow the contact-surface of the metal to show through; further decorative effect is obtained by pigmentation variation in the coating and/or partial metallization of the glass back-surface. The technique is also applied to bonding fittings to the powder-coated face of a door; of decals of cured powder-coating material to, or within, powder-coatings; of glass over apertures in metal walls; and of glass to glass in building up a laminate.

摘要: In manufacture of a glass architectural panel (FIG. 1) an aluminium foil is bonded to a glass sheet via a layer of thermosetting polyester powder-coating material. The powder is deposited on the foil as the foil unrolls and is melted to provide a fused layer which is then cooled to solidify the layer and arrest progress of curing. The solidified layer is sprayed with a silane adhesion promoter, before being heated momentarily to enable the foil with its adhering and solidified, but uncured, layer, to be rolled up for storage. The rolled foil is transferred nearer to a float-glass production line, where, after being heated to allow it to be unrolled, it is fed onto a hot glass sheet emerging from the line. The fused layer melts as it is brought down with the backing foil to contact the glass sheet and fulfil the cure of the powder material so as to establish the bond. Instead of a single foil, several may be provided overlapping one another (FIG. 3). Decorative effects can be obtained using different pigmentations of powder and partial metallization of the glass (FIG. 4). The technique of interrupting the cure is applicable to provision of a glass window (FIG. 5) and a glass laminate (FIG. 6).
