A container comprising a polyester composition with enhanced carbon dioxide and oxygen barrier properties and methods of improving the gas barrier properties of polyester containers are provided. The polyester composition comprises a polyester and a gas barrier enhancing additive. In a particular embodiment, the gas barrier enhancing additive comprises a compound having the chemical formula: X—(X1)s—COO—(X2)t—X3—(X4)u—OOC—(X5)v—X6 or X—(X1)s—OOC—(X2)t—X3—(X4)u—COO—(X5)v—X6

In particular embodiments, the polyester composition comprises a polyester, a creep control agent, and a gas barrier enhancing additive. In particular embodiments, the creep control agents are molecules or polymers comprising dianhydrides, bis-lactams, bis-oxazoles, and epoxides.

Syrup dispensing cups are provided that include a body structure that includes a first polyester or co-polyester resin with one or more first co-monomers incorporated into the first resin at a first mol % and having an intrinsic viscosity from about 0.45 dL/g to about 1.3 dL/g when measured at a temperature of 25 C. The body structure has a first opening that is sealed with a first sealing layer and a second opening sealed with a second sealing layer, in which each sealing layer includes a second PET-based co-polyester resin having one or more second co-monomers incorporated into the second resin at a second mol %, and the ratio of the first mole % to the second mol % is less than 1. Methods for or enhancing the shelf-life of syrup dispensing cups are also provided.

This disclosure provide new multilayer polyester (particularly PET) containers that have improved gas barrier properties over conventional monolayer PET containers. In particular, a 2,5-furandicarboxylate polyester (for example, poly(ethylene furan-2,5-dicarboxylate) (PEF)) barrier layer that has superior gas barrier and mechanical properties relative to PET, that is “sandwiched” between two PET layers, has been found to achieve a significantly higher barrier against gas permeation relative to conventional monolayer PET container of the same size and shape. Associated preforms, methods, and compositions are disclosed.
