摘要:
A briquette for growing plants comprises a hard compressed growth medium expansible by the addition of water and having an expansible shape-retaining means which retains the shape of the briquette for handling purposes. The growth medium may comprise peat moss, or soil to which a mixture of dry sodium bicarbonate and citric acid has been added. The shape-retaining means may comprise a nylon sleeve extending around the growth medium and compressed therewith. Alternatively peat moss may be mixed with a binder so that the peat moss particles are glued together. In a further embodiment the peat moss is mixed with a synthetic resin which can be foamed by blowing agents or the resin and peat moss can be beaten to a foam wherein the pores are filled with peat moss.

In the horticulture, large amounts of growth substrate blocks are used for the growing of cuttings, and these blocks should preferably be surrounded by a paper like casing. For the very manufacturing of these block packaging the casing material should be of a reasonably strong and good quality, which, however, may cause problems later on, when the plant roots during their growth pack against the casing wall. With the invention there is used for the casing a dual fraction material comprising partly a long-time durable, open web and partly a reinforcing and more or less web filling or covering material of a type that is brought to disintegrate either in the manufacturing process or in a suitably rapid manner by the natural influences, in particular moisturing, to which the blocks are exposed when taken in use. Thereafter, the said web may hold the block together without preventing root penetration.

The present invention relates to a method wherein seedlings, raised in a paper cylinder assembly connected together by means of connecting portions having a separating line forming the separation course in each are continuously pulled out while separating the cylinder one by one and planting them in the field. In the separation of seedling cylinders, a transplanter is provided with rolls for pulling out continuous seedling cylinders and other rolls for separating the pulled out seedling cylinders into individual seedling cylinders. The latter has a faster rotating speed than that of the former and has a cone-like shape or is mounted so as to incline with respect to the former, thereby separating paper cylinders into individual pot bodies at the connecting portions, one by one, while moving the separation acting points progressively. The separating-line in each connecting portion has an unjoined separation-guiding-portion extending from one end to 20-70% of the height of the connecting portion. Joined and unjoined portions are distributed over the remainder of the height.
