An apparatus and process is provided for improved asphaltene separation from heavy hydrocarbon or bitumen with low process complexity through mass transfer using solvent and counter-current flows, with three sections: an upper DAO/solid-asphaltene separation zone, a middle solvent mixing and segregation zone, and a bottom clarification zone. Solvent mixed with heavy hydrocarbon forms a process feed introduced to the process vessel's upper zone and exposed to counter-current solvent removing DAO from solid asphaltene particles in the feed, the particles fall through the middle zone and are mixed with introduced solvent, which introduced solvent segregates DAO-rich solution in the upper zone (for extraction from that zone) from solvent-rich mixtures in the middle mixing and lower clarification zones. Solvent flows and precipitate movement are controlled to optimize mass transfer in process, resulting in high DAO recovery and dry, solid asphaltene product.

A system for desalting a crude oil stream includes vessel that has an interior piping structure that releases wash water into a crude oil flow within the vessel. The piping structure, which may have more than one level, has a plurality of spray nozzles for dispersing or releasing the wash water into the flowing crude oil stream. The spray nozzles may be located on a same side or opposite sides of the piping structure. Where multiple levels are used, the number of spray nozzles on each level may be the same as or different than the number of spray nozzles on other levels. The pressure drop through each spray nozzle is no greater than 300 psi and the nozzles deliver a dilution water droplet no larger than 300 microns in diameter. A mixing valve, static mixer, or both can be placed downstream of the vessel.

The control system and method of the present invention controls a solvent refining unit which treats charge oil with a solvent in a refining tower to yield raffinate and extract-mix, strippers separate the solvent from the raffinate and from the extract-mix to provide refined waxy oil and extract oil, respectively. The solvent is returned to the tower and the refined waxy oil is subsequently dewaxed to provide refined oil. The present invention includes a device which senses the flow rate of the charge oil and provides a corresponding charge oil flow rate signal. The flow rate of the charge oil is controlled in accordance with the charge oil flow rate signal and a control signal. The temperature of the extract oil is sensed and a corresponding temperature signal provided. The temperature signal is used in controlling the temperature of the extract oil in cooperation with a second control signal. A parameter related to the quality of the charge oil and the refined oil and the extract-mix is sensed and corresponding parameter signals provided. A computer provides the first control signal to control the charge oil flow rate and the second control signal to control the temperature in accordance with the sensed charge oil flow rate, the extract oil temperature and the sensed quality parameter signals to achieve an optimum charge oil flow rate-yield operating condition.

The MP is recovered from the raffinate and from the extract mix and returned to the refining extractor. A system controlling the refining unit includes a gravity analyzer, a sulfur analyzer and viscosity analyzers; all sampling the light sour charge oil and providing corresponding signals.
