    摘要: The invention relates to a method for determining the state of a joint joining a first and a second drill string component. A drill rig includes a rotation unit for rotating the drill string and means for determining a representation of a torque applied by the rotation unit. A joint loosening mechanism distinct from the rotation unit apply a joint loosening torque acting on the drill string when loosening a joint. The method includes applying a torque in a joint loosening direction by means of the rotation unit, and applying a joint loosening torque acting on the drill string by means of the joint loosening mechanism.

    摘要: A wrench for making up or breaking up a pipe joint is provided. The wrench comprises a tong assembly having an upper tong and a lower tong. The upper tong has a first upper tong half pivotably connected to a second upper tong half at their first ends. The lower tong has a first lower tong half pivotably connected to a second lower tong half at their first ends. A central bearing operatively couples the upper tong and the lower tong to allow the upper tong to rotate relative to the lower tong or vice versa. The tong assembly has a ram assembly for pushing or pulling the upper tong at a tangential location thereof and the ram assembly is retracted or extended to move the tong assembly between an open position, a closed position, and a rotated closed position where the upper tong is rotated relative to the lower tong.

    摘要: An apparatus and method automatically tally drill string rods for use with a drilling machine. The machine comprises a rack and a rotary drive configured for longitudinal displacement between first and second longitudinal positions. A sensor system is configured to monitor the machine to detect a clamping force applied to rotationally immobilize the drill string and to detect a break-out torque generated by the rotary drive, detect a first longitudinal position of the rotary drive whereat the break-out torque is generated, and detect a second longitudinal position of the rotary drive whereat a make-up torque is generated by the rotary drive. A controller is configured to prevent release of the clamping force until the make-up torque is detected, and automatically enable release of the clamping force after the make-up torque is detected and, concordantly, to update a drill rod tally only when the first and second longitudinal positions are different.

    摘要: A test stand, for testing several parameters of power tongs used to make and break drill and casing pipe segments, comprises a base having a vertical, rotating shaft bearing along its length one or more disk brakes for stopping rotation of the shaft induced by tongs. In a particular embodiment, a vertical mast on the base supports a rotatable gantry which can lift and move power tongs into place above the test stand. Sensors detect several parameters which determine tong performance. Measurements of torque, RPM, temperature, pressure and speed are contrasted to standards for power tongs of like size and capacity and feedback as to the tongs' ability to make and break drill and pipe joints is provided. In another embodiment, a derrick sits atop the base and supports a second, inverted test stand for testing integrated power tongs.

    摘要: Automated make-up and break-up methods and apparatus for rotary oil well drilling are presented. The apparatus includes a drilling database storing tubular type records, a torque wrench having a spinner, and a controller. During make-up, the controller retrieves one or more tubular type records stored in the drilling database in order to configure the torque wrench and/or the spinner to connect an additional tubular section to a tubular string or to disconnect a connection between tubulars in accordance with tubular type parameters. Sensors are employed on various drill rig components and reported sensor values are monitored. Timers are started concurrent with the initiation of various make-up and break-out steps. Exceptions are thrown when sensor values are out-of-range or when steps take too long to complete. Advantages are derived from speeding-up drill rig operations.
