    Abstract: Wrench systems, methods, and related apparatus are used for determining angular misalignment in wrenches that make up and/or break out tubular connections. The systems, methods, and related apparatus are used to continuously monitor for angular misalignment and automatically correct for angular misalignment. A wrench system includes a first clamp assembly, a second clamp assembly, and a positioning subsystem. The positioning subsystem includes one or more sensor tracks mounted to the first clamp assembly, and one or more position sensors mounted to the second clamp assembly. The one or more position sensors are configured to interface with the one or more sensor tracks to measure an angular position of the second clamp assembly relative to the first clamp assembly.

    Abstract: A horizontal directional drilling machine includes a drill string rotational drive unit having an output member configured to connect with and selectively drive rotation of a drill string, the rotational drive unit including a hydraulic motor. A hydraulic circuit has a configuration that puts the motor in a drive mode to apply torque and a second configuration that puts the motor in a freewheel mode disabled from applying torque. The hydraulic circuit includes a first fluid flow path for connecting the hydraulic motor through a first rotary ball valve to one of an inlet side and an outlet side of a drive pump, and a second fluid flow path for selectively connecting the hydraulic motor through a second rotary ball valve to the other side of the drive pump. In the first configuration, there is no pressure drop across the first and second rotary ball valves.

    Abstract: A high-temperature and high-pressure simulator for a deep in-situ environment is provided. The simulator includes a high-fidelity sample chamber, where a lower end of the high-fidelity sample chamber is provided with a bottom cylinder.     Abstract: Systems and methods for preventing improper lifting of tubular members are described, in which sensing devices are used to detect when a tubular reaches a selected position within a lifting device suitable for engagement, and/or to detect when a lifting operation is initiated that would exceed the capacity of a lifting device. Operators are engaged with the tubular member and provided with a preselected force corresponding to the weight of one or more tubular members, such that when the weight of a lifting operation exceeds the preselected force, an audible device may be actuated responsive to sensor output, to immediately alert individuals, such that the improper lifting operation may be halted. Similarly, an audible device may be actuated responsive to sensor output when a tubular member reaches a selected position within the lifting device, such that additional movement may be ceased.
