An apparatus for controlling a data rate in a data client for a digital audio broadcasting system includes a buffer for storing data, a codec for coding data, and a control module for controlling a bit rate of the codec in response to a level of the data in the buffer. A method performed by the apparatus is also included.

The invention provides a reception method and apparatus which provides a series of frequency shifts and filtering operations to sideband signals (lower, upper, and middle), to enable detection if the central part of a signal is analog or digital, and to enable effective co-channel interference compensation. The invention enables (H)IBOC signals for example to be processed with a narrower bandwidth and therefore a lower processing clock speed and complexity is made possible compared to the conventional (H)IBOC-signal processing approach.

A method for processing a radio signal includes: receiving an FM in-band on-channel radio signal including a plurality of digitally modulated subcarriers in upper and lower sidebands; sampling the FM in-band on-channel radio signal to produce an input signal including complex digital samples of a combination of a desired one the upper and lower sidebands and an FM interferer; removing FM interferer components from the first signal by notch filtering to produce a notch-filtered signal; weighting the notch-filtered signal to produce a weighted notch-filtered signal; using a parametric filter to filter the input signal to produce a parametric-filtered input signal; and combining the weighted notch-filtered signal and the parametric-filtered input signal to produce an output signal. A radio receiver that implements the method is also included.

A service registry for a radio broadcasting system includes a memory for storing information relating to services to be provided over the broadcasting system, a processor coupled to the memory, and a core interface for exchanging messages between the processor and a plurality of users, the processor being programmed to retrieve the information from the memory in response to the messages received on the interface, and to output the retrieved information to an importer. A method of broadcasting and a broadcasting system are also provided.

A method and system for the transmission of digital data (210) over existing analog radio frequencies (230) is presented, wherein the digital data may include audio data, visual data or audio-visual data for presentation either with analog broadcast data or at a selectable time. The digital data may be transmitted over a plurality of sub-channels that have varying degrees or reliability (250). A “quality-of-service” process manages the transmission of digital data over various sub-channels based on the reliability of the sub-channel, the amount of digital data and the type of digital data to be transmitted. The digital data may further be encrypted and authenticated.

A system for blending a hybrid radio signal provides reduced volume level transitions during blending from an analog component of the hybrid signal to the digital component by adjusting blend and cross-fade variables, as well as setting a hysteresis mode to prevent undesirable jumping from digital mode back to analog mode sequentially. The system also compensates for digital AM frequency quality issues by adjusting a filter bandwidth when the transceiver blends the AM signal from analog to digital mode.

A system that blends a hybrid radio signal may provide reduced audio content skipping and may determine an audio correlation between analog and digital signal components in the hybrid radio signal before blending from the analog signal component to the digital signal component. The system may reduce volume level transitions during blending by adjustment of blend and cross-fade variables, as well as setting a hysteresis mode to prevent undesirable sequential jumping from digital mode back to analog mode. A method and apparatus are disclosed for combining digital sidebands with an FM analog signal for IBOC transmission by a single antenna. Specifically, a high power filter combiner for combining an FM analog and a digital signal of the same channel, or frequency, is disclosed. The combiner has two inputs that respectively receive an FM analog and a digital signal to be transmitted in the same FM channel. The combiner has mild tuned filters interposed between the inputs and the output which are tuned to pass the FM analog signal while reflecting the digital signal such that the passed FM analog signal and the reflected digital signal combine as IBOC, i.e., an FM analog signal with digital sideband signals. The combined IBOC signal is provided at an output of the combiner, capable for transmission through a single antenna.

An apparatus includes a network receiver for receiving an over-the-air in-band on-channel broadcast signal and extracting broadcast content from the broadcast signal, and an output for delivering the content by way of a first receiver output signal to a plurality of network player devices.
