    Abstract: A streaming device may request and download multi-layer video segments based on a number of factors including the artistic interest associated with the video segments and/or the status of a buffer area managed by the streaming device. The multi-layer segments may be coded using scalable coding techniques or a combination of scalable coding and simulcast coding techniques by which each of the video segments may be coded into one or more representations of different qualities and/or bitrates. When requesting the multi-layer segments, the streaming device may ensure that the fullness of the buffer area falls between a buffer underflow threshold and a backfilling threshold under various network conditions. The streaming device may estimate the available network bandwidth in order to facilitate the scheduling decisions. The streaming device may consider the artistic interest associated with the video segments during scheduling and may give priority to those segments with higher artistic interest.

    Abstract: The present disclosure provides a video definition grade determining method and apparatus, a server, a storage medium and a system. The video definition grade determining method comprises: in response to receiving a target video playing request transmitted by a client, determining a target region where the client is located and a current network speed of the client; determining, according to a video bit rate determining logic of the target region, a maximum video bit rate corresponding to the current network speed, wherein the video bit rate determining logic of the target region is used for determining a maximum video bit rate suitable for playing a video when a network speed of the target region is a respective network speed; obtaining a definition-grade video set for a target video corresponding to the target region; and according to the determined maximum video bit rate and a video bit rate of a definition-grade video in the obtained definition-grade video set, determining, in the obtained definition-grade video set, a definition-grade video to be played corresponding to the target video playing request.

    Abstract: A set-top box with self-monitoring and system and method for use of the same are disclosed. In one embodiment of the set-top box, a housing secures a television input, a television output, a processor, memory, and storage therein, which are communicatively interconnected by a busing architecture. The memory is accessible to the processor, and the memory includes processor-executable instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to detect when the television is not being utilized. Responsive thereto, the instructions cause the processor to scan channels received from the television input and generate a composite TV screen image data that may be resolved to a single TV screen image made from an assemblage of TV screen image captures corresponding to the scanned channels.
