Abstract: A session management involves registering at least one IPTV application in a registration table so that the registration table includes at least a respective identifier of the IPTV applications. The IPTV applications are invokable at a set top box and can be so-called embedded applications and/or browser-based applications. An event requiring the invocation of an IPTV application at the set top box is detected and triggers a look-up in the registration table. The registration table is thus used as source to indicate those IPTV applications that are potentially available and can be launched at the set top box. One of the registered applications is launched for the purpose of handling the detected event.

Abstract: A streaming device may request and download multi-layer video segments based on a number of factors including the artistic interest associated with the video segments and/or the status of a buffer area managed by the streaming device. The multi-layer segments may be coded using scalable coding techniques or a combination of scalable coding and simulcast coding techniques by which each of the video segments may be coded into one or more representations of different qualities and/or bitrates. When requesting the multi-layer segments, the streaming device may ensure that the fullness of the buffer area falls between a buffer underflow threshold and a backfilling threshold under various network conditions. The streaming device may estimate the available network bandwidth in order to facilitate the scheduling decisions. The streaming device may consider the artistic interest associated with the video segments during scheduling and may give priority to those segments with higher artistic interest.

Abstract: Future data connection quality may be predicted based on historical data connection quality, and future requests for data may be predicted based on past requests. These predictions may be used to help decide whether, when, and/or how to deliver the data in a proactive manner. For example, according to some aspects described herein, a future data connection quality may be predicted based at least on historical data connection quality. It may be determined whether to pre-deliver at least a portion of an item of content based at least on the predicted future data connection quality. The pre-delivered portion may include any portion of the content including a latter portion of the content. If so, then the at least the portion of the item of content may be pre-delivered to the device and/or to another destination.

Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for identifying a plurality of past videos posted via a first group of channels, determining, for each channel of a second group, an average number of access requests that a future video to be posted via a respective channel is predicted to receive within a first time interval after posting, determining, for each channel of the second group, a plurality of adjusted average numbers of access requests that the future video to be posted via the respective channel of the second group is predicted to receive within the first time interval, wherein each of the plurality of adjusted average numbers of access requests is determined using an adjustment factor reflecting a number of access requests received by a past video posted via a respective channel of the first group, and determining whether the second group of channels satisfies a predetermined access criterion.

In one embodiment of the set-top box, a housing secures a television input, a television output, a processor, memory, and storage therein, which are communicatively interconnected by a busing architecture. The memory is accessible to the processor, and the memory includes processor-executable instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to detect when the television is not being utilized. Responsive thereto, the instructions cause the processor to scan channels received from the television input and generate a composite TV screen image data that may be resolved to a single TV screen image made from an assemblage of TV screen image captures corresponding to the scanned channels.
