In accordance with the present invention a hatch cover hold down arrangement is provided including a handle which pivots about a first mounting pin. The handle includes an elongated locking slot. A locking member includes an extension which in one position is located over and holds in place a hatch cover. A locking pin extends from the locking member into the elongated slot in the handle and a mounting pin slot is provided in the locking member which receives the mounting pin upon which the handle is pivotably mounted. Preferably the mounting pin is supported by a flange located adjacent to the locking member which includes a vertical surface which guides the locking member during vertical movement between open and closed positions. The locking member includes a surface which engages the flange vertical surface as the locking member is lifted by the handle and locking pin from the closed position toward open position and prevents initial rotation of the locking member. However when the handle pivot pin bottoms out in the bottom of the slot in the locking member, the pressure within the car has been relieved and the locking member moves with the handle to a position which no longer obstructs the cover.

A lock-down assembly for a hinged hatch cover having a lock strap with an arm portion projecting laterally over a hopper car roof on the side of the hatchway opposite the hatch cover hinge. An operating lever is pivotally mounted adjacent to one end between the upstanding sides of a bifurcated support mounted on the roof adjacent to one side of the projecting arm of the lock strap when the hatch cover is closed. The underside of the lever presses down on the arm with the handle of the lever extending in the fore-and-aft direction above the car roof. A clevis or shackle is pivotally mounted on the upper ends of the upstanding sides of the bifurcated support. The pivoted end of the lever opposite the handle portion has a hook formation under which the bight of the clevis or shackle has hooked engagement when the lever is in its locking position. The lever is released by pressing down on the handle to raise the hook formation sufficiently to allow the clevis to be turned up out of hooking engagement.

A hatch cover of the kind in which at least two pairs of hinged covers are connected together for articulation, one end cover being articulated to an end of the hatch so that the covers are foldable in a zig-zig manner from a closed position in which they lie flat on the sill of the hatch to a fully open position in which they are folded together and extend upright from the sill. Adjacent pairs of covers are articulated by a drive mechanism including a crank engaged by an actuating piston and a link pivotally connected at one end to the crank and to one of two adjacent covers and at the other end to the other of the adjacent covers to allow the covers to be swivelled through an included angle of 180*. The lever arm of the crank between the line of action of the piston and the point of articulation of the crank with said one cover is shorter than the lever arm between the point of articulation of the crank with said one cover and a second link by which the crank is connected to the other cover in the fully extended positions of the covers, thereby enabling the pair of covers nearer to the end of the hatch to which the end cover is articulated to be fully folded while the next pair of covers is held fully open.
