摘要: Described herein is a splice chamber for accommodating excess optical cable obtained when making a fusion splice connection between two reels of cable. The chamber comprises two portions which define a space for the optical cable. The chamber is constructed to divide into two longitudinal half portions along a longitudinal line, but each end is retained until conditions are suitable for release. The space inside of the chamber is shaped to determine the bend radius for the enclosed optical cable and protects the cable during storage and handling. When a predetermined force is applied to one end of the chamber, the two longitudinal half portions separate to release the optical cable stored therein, pivoting about the other end.

摘要: Apparatus for generating a ring vortex which will damage the hull of the get vessel. The apparatus comprises a torpedo which is launched from an attack submarine in the direction of the target vessel. When the torpedo is at a predetermined position, the torpedo is detonated. Detonation of the torpedo results in the generation of a ring vortex. The ring vortex is directed toward the hull of the target vessel and will impact the hull of the target vessel with sufficient force to destroy or disable the target vessel. Positioned about the periphery of the torpedo are a plurality of necklace charges. The torpedo also has a central charge which is located near the front end of the torpedo. When detonated each necklace charge forms a ring of imploding gas bubbles which collapse inward. At a predetermined time period after the necklace charges are denoted, the main charge within the torpedo is denoted resulting in the generation of an expanding gas bubble which expands outwardly. The detonation of the necklace charges followed by the detonation of the main charge results in a region of counterflow which causes a substantially circular circulation pattern for the ring vortex.

摘要: A search angle selection system determines acoustic homing beam offset ans to be used by a torpedo from a group of target depth conditions in response to given environmental, tactical, target and weapon information. The system optimally bounds the region that is to be insonified. The system determines the search angle which best insonifies the depth band, that is, the region between the upper depth bound and the lower depth bound, for each search depth, accounting for the weapon's attack angle, including search depths which are not in the depth band itself. For each search depth, the system determines the relative depth separation of the search depth from each of the bounds, and based on this separation an aimpoint which projects from a reference plane through the torpedo is chosen at the depth of each bound. The aimpoint is selected from a table of empirically-determined values. The system modifies the aimpoint when strong negative gradients in the sound velocity profile are present in the ocean environment, and also in the case of strongly conducted rays. A reference insomnification beam axis angle is iteratively determined for each search depth with the axis causing a raypoint which intersects along the respective bound. The pair of reference beam axes whose ray paths intersect the upper and lower bound at the aimpoint for each search depth are averaged to provide the optimal homing beam angle for that search depth.

摘要: An interior actuation system for controlling an exterior control surface of a torpedo or the like which has an afterbody with radial inlet vanes defining inlet liquid passages to the propellers of the torpedo. A linear actuator is mounted in the afterbody. A bell crank is connected at one end to the linear actuator and extends radially outwardly therefrom through one of the inlet vanes. A driving connection, including a link arm connected at one end to the opposite end of the bell crank, extends longitudinally from the bell crank through the afterbody outside the liquid passages and operatively interconnects the control surface to the linear actuator.

摘要: The system provides propulsion of an underwater vehicle without the need noise producing gears or internal combustion engines. Variable speed of two impellers is automatically controlled from a single hydraulic piston regardless of depth, as is the horizontal and vertical attitude. Upright stability of the vehicle is held by controlling the speed of one impeller versus the other also using a single hydraulic piston. Since the speed controlling element allows output speed adjustments from zero to maximum, efficiency of the battery powered prime mover is high. The motor is allowed to come up to full high operational speed under no load conditions (zero output speed) developing vast amounts of kinetic energy through centrifugally forced contact rollers. This energy becomes available for the supply of peak power without taxing the prime mover, while continuing to reestablish the spent kinetic energy during periods of low power output. The system is suitable for utilizing digital control inputs that can feasibly be supplied by radio control through an antenna external to the system.
