    Abstract: An assembly having a bearing with an axis of rotation, and a fibre-based sensor for sensing strain or temperature of the bearing is disclosed. The sensor extends in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation. An aircraft system is disclosed including a wheel supported on an axle by a first bearing and a second bearing. The system further includes a first fibre optic sensor for sensing a strain or temperature of the first bearing, a second fibre optic sensor for sensing a strain or temperature of the second bearing, and an interrogator to analyse optical signals from the sensors to determine differences in the strains or temperatures of the first bearing and the second bearing.

    Abstract: An assembly is provided for an aircraft. This aircraft assembly includes a fuselage and a second system. The fuselage includes a wall and a hatch configured to close an opening in the wall. The sensor system includes an optical fiber, a transmitter and a receiver. The optical fiber is arranged at an interface between the hatch and the wall. The transmitter is configured to transmit first electromagnetic radiation into the optical fiber. The receiver is configured to detect second electromagnetic radiation received from the optical fiber to provide receiver data. The sensor system is configured to detect fluid leakage across the interface between the hatch and the wall based on the receiver data.

    Abstract: A fibre optic cable structure (300) suitable for fibre optic sensing with an improved sensitivity to an environmental parameter is described. The structure (300) includes an optical fibre (301) and a bend inducer (304) responsive to the environmental parameter to control bending of the optical fibre. The bend inducer (304) is configured to adopt a first configuration, that induces a first curvature of the optical fibre, at a first value of the environmental parameter and to adopt a second configuration at a second, different, value of the environmental parameter that induces a second, different, curvature of the optical fibre. By action of the bend inducer (304) a change in value of the environmental parameter imparts a bending force on the optical fibre.

    Abstract: The disclosed principles provide techniques for 3D fabrication of sensing systems embedded inside battery cells and provide cell parameter data for a comprehensive and robust battery management system. The disclosed principles provide online and real-time monitoring battery state-of-health down to the individual cell level of each battery using embedded sensors on one or more of the internal layers of a cell, such as the dielectric separators found in such battery cells. The implementation of the disclosed principles in individual battery cells therefore provides an increased likelihood to mitigate catastrophic failures in batteries. In addition, the disclosed fabrication processes for printing sensors directly on one or more of the components or layers within each individual battery cell significantly reduce manufacturing steps required by conventional battery management systems. The disclosed principles also provided for a unique silica-based ink for use in the 3D printing of such embedded cell sensing components.

    Abstract: A fiber optic sensing head includes a single-mode optical fiber, a twin hole optical fiber including a cladding region and a core region surrounded by the cladding region, and the core region includes a second core located at an axis center, as well as a first and second round holes symmetrically distributed with respect to the second core; an incoming end of a gradient refractive-index fiber is connected to an outgoing end of the twin hole optical fiber with the incoming end of the gradient index fiber aligned with the outgoing end of the single-mode optical fiber at center. A thermal-sensitive structure is filled in a preset length part of the second round hole extending along an axial direction of the twin hole optical fiber. An incoming end of the twin hole optical fiber is connected to an outgoing end of the gradient index optical fiber with displacement.
