摘要:
A method for assembling a population of ferrules to minimize the eccentricity of the fibers typically includes the steps of selecting a set of ferrules, determining the eccentricity of the ferrules, selecting a fiber, inserting the fiber within the ferrule bore, orienting the fiber within the ferrule, and securing the fiber in place. The result is a population of ferrules that can be mated with little or no insertion loss.

A ferrule boot for attachment to an optical fiber ribbon has a channel extending therethrough. The channel has at its distal end a first tapered lead-in section sized and dimensioned such that the optical fiber ribbon with the internal optical fibers stripped and exposed is insertable through the ferrule boot. The first tapered lead-in section is connected to a second tapered section, and the second tapered section prevents adhesives used to affix the optical fiber ribbon to a ferrule from wicking to the outside of the ferrule boot. The channel has a substantially straight section fitting intimately over the outside of the optical fiber ribbon to center and guide the exposed optical fibers to the center of the proximal end of the channel. In an embodiment, the ferrule boot also has a lip member disposed proximate to the proximal end of the channel to help seal the adhesive and ease insertion. Additionally, the lip may also prevent withdrawal of the optical fiber ribbon. In another embodiment, the ferrule boot also has a vent hole to allow air or other gases trapped in the ferrule boot cavity to vent to the ambient atmosphere.

A preassembled multifiber connector is provided that includes a connector housing and a windowless multifiber ferrule that is substantially rectangular in lateral cross-section. The windowless multifiber ferrule can be at least partially disposed within an internal cavity defined by the connector housing to thereby form a multifiber connector that is free of optical fibers. Thus, the multifiber connector is capable of being preassembled prior to inserting the plurality of optical fibers into the optical fiber bores defined by the windowless multifiber ferrule. A corresponding method of preassembling a multifiber connector is therefore also provided according to the present invention. A ferrule is also provided that is capable of being selectively converted from a windowless configuration to a windowed configuration. The ferrule of this embodiment includes a ferrule body that not only defines at least one optical fiber bore, but that also defines a well extending through a side surface of the ferrule body. The ferrule body also includes a removable web at least partially covering the well to thereby define the windowless configuration of the ferrule. The web is capable of being selectively removed from the well such that the uncovered well forms a window through the side surface of the ferrule that opens into the at least one optical fiber bore to thereby define a windowed configuration of the ferrule.

A ferrule and an associated fabrication method are provided that facilitates fiber-to-fiber contact without requiring the end portions of the optical fibers to protrude beyond the front face of the ferrule. The ferrule includes a ferrule body having opposed front and rear faces and defining at least one optical fiber bore extending between the front and rear faces and adapted to receive an optical fiber. Advantageously, at least the medial portion of the front face through which the optical fiber bores open protrudes outwardly beyond at least some peripheral portions of the front face. By designing the front face such that the medial portion protrudes outwardly beyond peripheral portions of the front face, angular errors in the peripheral portions of the front face and dirt or other particles that accumulate on the peripheral portions of the front face will not prevent the medial portions of the front faces of a pair of ferrules from making contacting as the respective fiber optic connectors are mated. As such, the end portions of the optical fibers need not protrude much, if any, beyond the front face of the ferrule in order to establish fiber-to-fiber contact such that the ferrule can absorb at least some of the forces that would otherwise be imparted to the optical fibers.

The challenge of pulling an optical fiber having a connector at its terminal end without incurring damage to the fiber or connector due to excessive pulling or bending is met by introducing a breakaway feature that disconnects the connectorized fiber from the pulling mechanism upon detecting excessive force. The breakaway feature may be positioned at several locations along the pathway connecting the optical fiber and the pulling force. In one embodiment the breakaway feature is disposed on a cover over the connectorized front end of the optical fiber. In other embodiments the breakaway element is inserted along the cord connecting the connectorized optical fiber to the pulling force.

A multifiber connector subassembly is provided that includes a ferrule and a multifiber alignment adapter for individually guiding the plurality of individual optical fibers into alignment with respective ones of the bores or microholes defined by the ferrule. In this regard, the ferrule includes a forward portion that defines the plurality of bores for receiving respective end portions of a plurality of optical fibers and a rear portion that defines an opening of a predetermined shape. The multifiber alignment adapter defines a plurality of lengthwise extending passageways for receiving respective ones of the plurality of optical fibers. The multifiber alignment adapter also has a forward end having an exterior shape that corresponds to the predetermined shape of the opening defined by the rear portion of the ferrule. As such, the forward end of the multifiber alignment adapter can be positioned within the opening defined by the rear portion of the ferrule such that each passageway defined by the multifiber alignment adapter is aligned with a respective bore defined by the ferrule. Accordingly, the multifiber connector subassembly can guide each individual optical fiber through a passageway and into the respective bore defined by the ferrule without being stubbed or otherwise damaged and without requiring that the optical fibers be ribbonized.

A gender selectable fiber optic connector is provided which can be readily converted between male and female configurations following assembly and polishing of the connector. The gender selectable fiber optic connector includes a housing, a ferrule operably connected to the housing such that a forward portion of the ferrule extends beyond the housing, and a shroud adapted to be mounted upon the forward portion of the ferrule such that the forward portion of the ferrule extends through a passageway defined by the shroud. In order to alter the gender of the fiber optic connector, the shroud has both male and female configurations. In this regard, the male configuration of the shroud includes at least one guide pin extending lengthwise through the passageway defined by the shroud for engaging a lengthwise extending alignment groove defined by the ferrule in order to produce a male fiber optic connector. In contrast, the female configuration of the shroud is free of guide pins such that mounting the female configuration of the shroud upon the ferrule produces a female fiber optic connector. In addition to the gender selectable fiber optic connector and the associated shroud, a method of fabricating the gender selectable fiber optic connector is provided. Moreover, an outlet assembly is also provided for receiving a fiber optic connector having a rectangular shape in lateral cross-section, such as an MT connector or the gender selectable fiber optic connector having a rectangularly-shaped shroud, and for precisely aligning the rectangularly-shaped fiber optic connector with a substantially cylindrical ferrule, such as a DC or QC ferrule, so as to increase the flexibility with which different types of ferrules can be interconnected as well as the precision of the resulting interconnection.

The face of a ferrule and ferrule assembly is polished in the present invention so a portion of optical fibers extending therethrough protrude beyond the front face of the ferrules. The ferrules are secured in a polisher and polished with a fibrous material that preferentially etches the ferrule relative to the optical fibers. The front face of the ferrule assembly is polished with a fibrous material having abrasive materials attached thereto, without the need for a slurry.

A splice housing assembly and an associated assembly method are provided in which the ferrule is mechanically decoupled from the splice body such that the ferrule has at least limited movement, typically in an off-axis direction, relative to the splice body. For example, the ferrule can be mechanically decoupled from the splice body by spacing the ferrule in a lengthwise direction from the splice body such that a medial portion of the first optical fiber extends between the ferrule and the splice body.
