摘要: A system for cross-phase-modulation-noise reduced transmission in hybrid networks includes a first, second, and third set of optical transmitters. The first set of optical transmitters transmits a set of ten gigabit per second signals. The second set of optical transmitters transmits a set of forty gigabit per second signals. The third set of optical transmitters transmits a set of one hundred gigabit per second signals. On a wavelength spectrum, the set of 10 G signals is immediately adjacent to the set of 100 G signals, and the set of 100 G signals is immediately adjacent to the set of 40 G signals. The set of 10 G signals and the set of 100 G signals are not separated by a guard band. In addition, the set of 100 G signals and the set of 40 G signals are also not separated by a guard band.

摘要: In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, a system and method for transmitting traffic in a plurality of passive optical networks (PONs) is provided. In a particular embodiment, a method for transmitting traffic in a plurality of passive optical networks (PONs) includes transmitting traffic at a first wavelength and at a second wavelength from an optical line terminal (OLT). The method also includes combining the traffic in the first wavelength and the traffic in the second wavelength and splitting the combined traffic into a plurality of copies. The method further includes forwarding a first copy to a first wavelength router at a first distribution node and forwarding a second copy to a second wavelength router at a second distribution node, wherein the first wavelength router is coupled to a first set of optical network units (ONUs) and the second wavelength router is coupled to a second set of ONUs. The method additionally includes routing the first copy such that only a subset of one or more ONUs in the first set of ONUs receives the traffic in the first wavelength and only a subset of one or more ONUs in the first set of ONUs receives the traffic in the second wavelength. The method also includes routing the second copy such that only a subset of one or more ONUs in the second set of ONUs receives the traffic in the first wavelength and only a subset of one or more ONUs in the second set of ONUs receives the traffic in the second wavelength.

摘要: An optical transmission system that alleviates waveform distortions due to nonlinear effects in fibers. A transmitter sends WDM signals to a receiver over a dispersion-managed optical transmission line with in-line optical repeaters. The transmission line is divided into a plurality of dispersion compensation intervals each composed of a main segment and a compensation segment. Chromatic dispersion is managed such that the dispersion compensation intervals have a non-zero net dispersion at every boundary point between them, or such that the number of zero-dispersion boundary points is reduced. The main segment is a series of repeater sections with negative dispersion, while the compensation segment is a single repeater section with positive dispersion. Non-uniform distribution of net chromatic dispersions over the transmission length is achieved by combining repeater section with different average dispersions, dispersion compensation intervals with different numbers of repeater sections, or repeater sections with different span lengths.

摘要: A system operable to monitor a polarization controller includes the polarization controller and a polarization controller monitor. The polarization controller polarizes the signal to yield a polarized signal comprising a first signal component and a second signal component, where the first signal component is orthogonally polarized with respect to the second signal component. The polarization controller monitor monitors a first polarization indicating waveform of the first signal component and a second polarization indicating waveform of the second signal component. The polarization controller monitor determines whether to adjust polarization of the received signal by polarization controller in accordance with the first polarization indicating waveform and the second polarization indicating waveform.

摘要: A system and method for dispersion compensation of an optical signal in a hybrid network includes generating optical traffic in a first set of one or more channels, wherein the traffic in the first set of channels is modulated using a first modulation technique. Optical traffic is generated in a second set of one or more channels, wherein the traffic in the second set of channels is modulated using a second modulation technique. An optical dispersion pre-compensation is applied to the second set of channels. The first set of channels and the second set of channels are combined to form an optical signal, and the optical signal is transmitted over an optical network.

摘要: A demodulator comprises an input splitter, optical device sets, and couplers. The input splitter splits an input signal comprising symbols to yield a number of signals. A first optical device set directs a signal of along a first path. A second optical device set directs another signal along a second path to yield a delayed signal. At least a portion of the second path is in free space. A path length difference between the first path and the second path introduces a symbol delay between the first signal and the second signal. A coupler receives a portion of the signal and a portion of the delayed signal to generate interference, where the interference indicates a phase shift between a phase corresponding to a symbol and a successive phase corresponding to a successive symbol.
