This invention is applicable to wireless communication between a user equipment (UE) and a base station using frames where at least one uplink (UL) is assigned a subframe to respond to a plurality of DL assigned subframes. This invention is an improvement in the acknowledge (ACK) or non-acknowledge (NAK) response by the UE. The UE generates an ACK or NAK dependent upon whether a DL communication is correctly received. For an UL subframe assigned to respond to communications on plural DL subframes, the UE logically combines plural ACK/NAK responses into a single bundled response for transmission to the base station. This logical combining produces a bit in a first digital state if all said responses are ACKs and in a second opposite digital state if any response is a NAK.

The UCI includes a least two elements, a first set of symbols produced using a first information element and a second set of symbols produced using a second information element. A transport block size (TBS) of a first uplink message (RACH Msg3) transmitted on a Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH) during a random access procedure in a User Equipment (UE) accessing a radio access network may be determined by receiving a pathloss threshold parameter. A downlink pathloss value indicative of radio link conditions between the UE and a base station (eNB) serving the UE is then determined. A smaller value of TBS is selected from a set of TBS values if the determined pathloss value is greater than an operating power level of the UE minus the pathloss threshold parameter. A larger value of TBS is selected if the pathloss value is less than the operating power level of the UE minus the pathloss threshold parameter and the TBS required to transmit the RACH Msg3 exceeds the smaller TBS value.

Resource buffers are distributed into sub-bands. Each user equipment is assigned to a sub-band with at least one sub-band assigned plural user equipment. The base station transmits user equipment according to assigned sub-bands. A single user equipment may be assigned one sub-band while plural user equipment are assigned to another sub-band. In one embodiment the base station has N transmit antennas. N user equipment is assigned to a first sub-band and less than N user equipment is assigned to a second sub-band. In another embodiment a first second user equipment is assigned a first sub-band and the first and a third user equipment are assigned to a second sub-band.

Within a wireless network, feedback information from one node to another node is necessary to support various functions. The first node receives an allocation of resources for data transmission. The first node generates cyclic redundancy check (CRC) bits for a selected feedback control information type and encodes the selected feedback information and the CRC bits. The encoding of the feedback information and the CRC bits is adaptive based the amount of allocated resources. The encoded feedback information and CRC bits are then transmitted to the other node using a subset of the allocated resources on the physical shared channel that is normally used only for data transmissions.

This invention is a method for time-sharing sounding resources. A first embodiment defines one common sounding period for all user equipment and all sounding resources. A second embodiment allows for different sounding periods so long as each individual sounding resource uses only one sounding period. A third embodiment offers the most flexibility in sharing of the sounding resources by permitting changes in time. The first option is a special case of the second option. The second option is a special case of the third option.
