Abstract: A hybrid propulsion system for a tiltrotor aircraft comprises one or more engines that provide thrust whenever the tiltrotor aircraft is in a first forward flight mode, one or more electrical or hydraulic power sources, and two or more pylon assemblies. Each pylon assembly houses one or more electric or hydraulic motors connected to the one or more electrical or hydraulic power sources and a proprotor. All or part of each pylon assembly is rotatable. The proprotors provide lift whenever the tiltrotor aircraft is in a vertical takeoff and landing mode and a hover mode, and provide thrust whenever the tiltrotor aircraft is in a second forward flight mode.

Abstract: According to one implementation of the present disclosure, a method for determining airspeed for an unpowered vehicle is disclosed. The method includes: during flight, determining, by an accelerometer disposed on the unpowered vehicle, first and second accelerometer outputs, where the first and second accelerometer outputs correspond to respective first and second body-fixed load factor measurements; determining an angle-of-attack parameter; determining a body Z-force coefficient based on the angle-of-attack parameter; and determining an airspeed value based on the second body-fixed load factor measurement and the second body-fixed coefficient.

Abstract: An unmanned rotorcraft includes an airframe, rotor blades that are coupled to the airframe for rotation therewith, a propulsion unit having a propeller, and an actuator that is coupled to the airframe and adapted to temporarily reorient the propulsion unit such that an axis of the propeller moves out of alignment with an axis of the rotor blades. Rotation of the propeller causes counter-rotation of the airframe and rotor blades. The rotor blades and blades of the propeller are adapted to deploy from collapsed positions when flight of the rotorcraft is initiated. A method of operation by the rotorcraft includes, when it is determined that a current heading does not correspond to a determined flight path, causing the actuator to temporarily reorient the propulsion unit in accordance with an angular orientation of the actuator relative to the current heading.

Abstract: A ring gear assembly includes a ring gear, a gear box case, and a set of bolts. The ring gear includes a set of gear teeth inside the ring gear and arranged in a circle around the ring gear axis. The ring gear further includes a set of flanges arranged along at least one side of the ring gear. Each flange has a respective flange bolt hole therethrough, and each flange bolt hole has a respective bolt axis that is oriented perpendicular to the ring gear axis. The gear box case has a set of gear box bolt holes therethrough, each gear box bolt hole corresponding to a respective one of the flange bolt holes. Each of the bolts passes through a respective one of the gear box bolt holes and its corresponding flange bolt hole to fasten the ring gear to the gear box case.

Abstract: The present invention includes a system and method for slowing the rotation of a rotor using, for example, rotor brake system for a rotorcraft comprising: one or more generators connected to a main rotor gearbox; an electric distributed anti-torque system mounted on a tail boom of the rotorcraft comprising two or more electric motors connected to the one or more generators, wherein the two or more electric motors are connected to one or more blades; and wherein a rotation of the rotor is slowed by placing a drive load on the main rotor gearbox with the one or more generators to bleed the mechanical power from rotor into electrical power via the two or more electric motors, wherein the electric distributed anti-torque system generates thrust in opposing directions.
