    Abstract: A hopper-type hot melt dispenser for use in liquifying and dispensing drum or pail quantities of slug form hot melt includes a hopper size to receive a drum or pail of slug form hot melt. Band heaters around the circumference of the hopper heat the walls of the container suspended in the hopper causing slug form hot melt contained therein to be released as a slug into the hopper. The method of use of the apparatus provides for supporting a container of slug form hot melt in the hopper and heating the container with the band heaters until the slug is released, whereupon the container is removed from the hopper leaving the slug deposited therein.

    Abstract: An apparatus for melting and dispensing rapidly degradable reactive adhesive such as moisture curable hot melt adhesive from a thermally conductive, sealed container includes a housing within which the container is supported in a position to engage a heated surface of a platen. The platen is mounted within the housing in fluid communication with a heated manifold carrying a gear pump. The platen melts the adhesive within the container and provides for the transfer of heat uniformly throughout the stream of melted adhesive discharged through the outlet of the container. The melted adhesive is transmitted from the platen into the gear pump in the manifold which is thermally isolated from the platen to maintain the adhesive therein at a substantially constant temperature. After the container is emptied, a drippage collection structure associated with the container support is pivoted beneath the outlet of the container to catch any residual adhesive and prevent spillage which might occur in the course of removing an empty container from the housing.

    Abstract: Apparatus for preparing and dispensing thermoplastic resin has a conveyor with a chamber provided with heating elements, a conveyor screw mounted in the chamber and connected to a drive motor, a resin inlet and a resin outlet. To ensure the intended continuous dispensing of the resin even during intermittent operation, a control device is provided having inputs connected to a resin pressure sensor, a conveyor speed of rotation sensor and a resin temperature sensor. Intended values for the conveyor speed, resin pressure and resin temperature are supplied to the control device, which regulates the pressure during interruption of the dispensing of the resin and effects a speed regulation or a pressure regulation with a superimposed speed regulation during dispensing of the resin. For plasticizing of the resin, which is supplied in solid, preferably granular form, and since the conveyor geometry is designed to produce minimum friction, external heating by the heating elements is required. The temperature at the outlet is monitored by the temperature sensor and regulated by the control device.

    Abstract: Apparatus for melting and pumping molten liquid material from a drum of material which is solid at room temperature and which includes a platen assembly having a top platen and a lower heating platen suspended from the top platen but movable vertically relative thereto. A flexible, expansible sealing element extends between the peripheral edges of the top platen and the lower heating platen so that when the platen assembly is lowered into the open top of a drum of solid material and contacts the top of the solid material, subsequent downward movement of the top platen is operable to move the top platen downwardly toward the heating platen and cause the expansible sealing element to expand radially outward into contact with the interior surface of the drum. When the platen assembly is lifted from the drum, the top platen moves away from the lower heating platen and thereby contracts the diameter of the expansible element so as to move it out of contact with the interior surface of the drum.

    Abstract: A controlled temperature hot melt adhesive dispensing system including three closed loop temperature control arrangements along a flow path for hot melt adhesive extending from an upstream adhesive source to a downstream adhesive dispenser. As disclosed, each closed loop temperature control arrangement includes a comparator which compares the temperature sensed by a temperature sensor with a setpoint temperature to produce a control signal for a heater in the temperature control arrangement. The temperature control loops are located along the adhesive flow path so that the second closed loop temperature controller is upstream from the first closed loop temperature controller; and the third closed loop temperature controller is upstream from both the first and second temperature controllers. A first feedback circuit scales and integrates the control signal from the first location to produce a first feedback circuit output which adjusts the setpoint temperature at the second location. A second feedback circuit scales and integrates the control signal from the second location to produce a second feedback output which adjusts the third setpoint temperature. In this way, the three closed loop temperature control arrangements are cascaded so that the control signals developed are coupled, directly or indirectly, to each upstream closed loop temperature control arrangement.

    Abstract: The rod feed apparatus is made up of a number of telescoping tubes. A first tube (16) is fixed in the apparatus frame and has a connection (46) for a flexible pipe by which it is connected to a melt chamber. A guide tube (36) has a sliding fit with and can slide in the tube (16), the guide tube being secured to a lead-in tube (32) which is clamped inside a support tube (18), the support tube (18) being arranged to slide on the outside of the first tube (16). Rod adhesive is supplied through the lead-in tube (34), into the guide tube (36) and then to the first tube (16). The guide tube is thin-walled so that effectively the rod has a sliding fit with the internal bore of each of the three tubes referred to. For feeding the rod, a jaw (38) projects through slots in the support tube (18) and lead-in tube (32) and is mounted for movement with the various tubes (18, 32, 36). In operation, as the jaw and tubes referred to are advanced, the guide tube passing inside the fixed tube (16), while as they are retracted, a further jaw member (42) grips the adhesive rod and prevents its return movement therewith.The apparatus is suitable for use especially, but not exclusively, with machines for performing lasting operations on shoe bottoms, wherein adhesive is applied progressively along side portions of the shoe bottoms prior to operation of lasting instrumentalities thereof.

    Abstract: An apparatus for applying hot thermoplastic stripe material to a solid surface. The apparatus comprises a pipe circuit including various means for storing and circulating stripe material, an applying device for said material, as well as an electronic control unit controlling the applying device. The applying device comprises a plurality of adjoining controllable gates. Each gate opening is of a width, i.e. the dimension perpendicular to the paper of FIG. 1, corresponding to a width module in the multi-stripe complex to be applied, whereas the height of the gate opening corresponds to the thickness of the applied material. The total width of the gates corresponds at least to the total width of the multi-stripe complex to be applied. Fluid-operated actuating means are present on the applying device, which serve to open and close the gates quickly. In this manner a possibility of a simultaneous applying of several marking stripes in a multi-stripe complex is obtained. Furthermore, the width of each stripe is easy to change. In addition, it is ensured that the beginning and the ending of each stripe is clear cut.

    Abstract: A container wherein exposed surfaces thereof which are particularly subjected to a chemical reaction, such as corrosion, are protected by the application of a thixotropic lacquer. A typical installation is the application of a band of thixotropic lacquer internally of the container along the longitudinal side seam. A thixotropic lacquer has the characteristic that there is very little flow after its application to a surface, and thus is particularly adapted for covering raw edges and like exposed areas of containers. The thixotropic lacquer is applied preferably in plural closely adjacent streams which unite after the lacquer engages the container surface. Beneficial results are obtained by adjusting the temperature of the container and/or lacquer, and further by heating the applied band of lacquer.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for the handling of hot melt materials and the like for coating a web with the hot melt. Hot melt is fed from a source through a filter to a heated tank, and from the heated tank it is pumped to an extrusion head. Pumping of the hot melt from the tank to the extrusion head is accomplished solely by providing pressurized gas at slightly more than one atmosphere pressure over the hot melt in the tank. The source pressure of the hot melt is isolated from the supply pressure at the extrusion head, and the web to be coated is passed in operative relationship with the extrusion head. The hot melt is metered in a thin film flowing over heated surfaces in order to insure thermal uniformity without agitation. The level of hot melt in the tank is maintained at a predetermined level, and the extrusion head is provided at substantially the same predetermined level so that the extrusion will not overflow or drain when the pressurized gas from the tank is vented. The hot melt is fed into the tank and withdrawn from the tank in such a way that bubbles in the hot melt come to the surface and pop and/or form a foam on the top of the hot melt so that the withdrawn hot melt is substantially air free.
