The active suspension system includes seat actuating members and sensors for monitoring movement of the vehicle and/or the vehicle seat, and the seat actuating members. The seat actuating members also function to provide mechanical support for the vehicle seat. A control system accepts feedback from the sensors and responsively directs movement of the seat actuating members to limit seat movement in response to vehicle movement. A method for using an active suspension system to limit seat movement in response to vehicle movement also forms part of the present invention.

An active shock-absorbing boat seat system has a seat system mounted to the boat deck through an active shock absorber. Sensors monitor both the shock to be passed from the deck to the seat as well as the shock actually received by the seat after passing through the shock absorbing system. A controller monitors the shock levels and provides a continuing control signal to the shock-absorbing unit to control the response of the shock-absorbing unit during the duration of the shock. The control system can provide for adjustment of various operating parameters for the system, including initial position of the seating system, overall ride stiffness, maximum allowable shock, and other parameters.

A semi-active control method for a controllable fluid damper used in seat supports. The present method filters a relative displacement signal phase shifting the relative displacement sine wave by an angle from greater than 0.degree. through an angle less than 90.degree. to get a relative rate. The sign of the relative rate is compared to that of an absolute velocity curve obtained by integrating the absolute acceleration value obtained by an accelerometer attached to the controlled seat. If the signs are the same, the output to the damper is set to a minimum; if the signs are different, the value is set at the absolute velocity multiplied by an input gain. Endstop limits can be implemented with this control method.

The present invention also includes a simple device to remotely adjust and control the response movement of a hydraulic seat actuator. Also included in the invention is a means of controlling the actions of one or more hydraulic double acting piston pumps.
