A thermosetting coating composition which may have nonvolatile solids content as high as 60% or greater and which may be employed as an automotive topcoat. The composition, exclusive of pigments, solvent, reactive and non-reactive diluents and other non-reactive components, consists essentially of:(A) A binder composition consisting essentially of:(1) Between about 30 and about 75 weight percent of one or more low viscosity resins selected from hydroxy functional acrylic polymers, hydroxy functional polyethers and hydroxy functional polyesters, each of which (i) is substantially soluble in the solvent of the composition and (ii) has a number average molecular weight of between about 1000 and about 2500; and(2) Between about 70 and about 25 weight percent of one or more crosslinked dispersion polymers each of which is substantially insoluble in the solvent of the composition; and(B) An aminoplast crosslinking agent in an amount of between about 5 and about 40 parts per 100 parts of said binder composition. The crosslinked dispersion polymer is prepared by free radical polymerization of 0.5 to 3.5 weight percent of di-,tri- or tetravinyl monomers and 99.5 to 96.5 weight percent of at least one other copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, in the presence of (i) hydrocarbon dispersing liquid which is a solvent for the polymerizable monomer, but a non-solvent for the resulting crosslinked polymer, and (ii) polymeric dispersion stabilizer which is solvated by said dispersing liquid and associated with said crosslinked polymer so as to maintain a separation between particles thereof, thereby inhibiting coagulation of said particles, wherein polymerization is carried out at elevated temperature such that the dispersion polymer first forms and then is crosslinked.

A method is provided for the preparation of an acrylate copolymer having a number average molecular weight of 400-2000 by polymerization of a monomer mixture consisting of 35-60 mole % of styrene and/or .alpha.-methyl styrene, 20-60 mole % of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid and 0-30 mole % of one or more other monovinyl compounds in the presence of a 2 to 8 carbon atoms-containing mercaptomonocarboxylic acid or mercaptodicarboxylic acid as chain length regulator in an amount of 0.05 to 0.2 moles per mole of the monomeric compounds, after which the resulting reaction product is brought into reaction with a glycidyl ester of a monocarboxylic acid. The invention also relates to a liquid coating composition having a solids content of at least 60% by weight based on the acrylate copolymer thus prepared and a curing agent.

A fast curing, coating composition that is adapted for use as an a auotmotive topcoat and which upon curing forms a hard, glossy, durable coating exhibiting excellent resistance to solvents and water. The coating composition which may contain greater than about 55 percent by weight of nonvolatile solids and, exclusive of pigments, solvents and other nonreactive components, consists essentially of:(A) a bifunctional copolymer bearing hydroxy functionality and pendent epoxy functionality, having a number average molecular weight (M.sub.n) of between about 1500 and about 10,000 and a glass transition temperature (Tg of between about -25.degree. and about 70.degree.;(B) a reactive catalyst comprising at least one phosphonic acid derivative;(C) an amine-aldehyde resin crosslinking agent; and(D) optionally, a hydroxy functional additive.The phosphonic acid derivative catalyst is included in the composition in an amount sufficient to provide between about 0.8 and about 1.4 equivalents of acid functionality in copolymer (A), and the amine-aldehye resin crosslinking agent is included in the composition in an amount sufficient to provide at least about 0.4 equivalents of nitrogen crosslinking functionality for each equivalent of hydroxy functionality included in the composition.

The acrylic polymer has a weight average molecular weight of about 15,000 to 100,000 and contains from about 2 to 20 percent by weight of an alkyl ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid containing from 14 to 20 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, for example, stearyl methacrylate. The compositions are particularly useful as water-based exterior coatings for automobiles and trucks.
