摘要: A fluid velocity measurement system includes a thermal generation means operated for short durations of time and disposed within a conduit suitable for guiding at least a portion of a fluid whose velocity is to be determined. Disposed downstream in the fluid guide means is at least one of a first and second thermal sensing means. The sensing means are spaced from each other. The first and second thermal sensing means are differentially coupled. The time period starting with the thermal generation means being turned on and heating a slug of fluid and extending to the generation of a differential electrical signal from the sensing means detecting the heated slug of fluid is the flight time of the heated slug of fluid. In one embodiment of the invention circuitry is provided to measure the actual flight time and divide it into a predetermined period of time resulting in a quotient which is proportional to the fluid velocity. In another embodiment the flight time is measured by a count which is divided into a predetermined count which is equivalent to a quotient also proportional to the fluid velocity. Both embodiments further include means for receiving the quotient and converting it into an appropriate signal to operate a numerical display.

摘要: The speed of flow of a fluid is measured by transmitting across the flowing fluid upstream and downstream ultrasonic energy beams, transmitted beams, deriving electrical outputs therefrom, detecting the outputs to provide upstream and downstream detected signals representing noise imparted to the transmitted radiant energy beams by the flowing fluid, digitizing the detected signals, and imposing a time delay or delays on the upstream signal corresponding to the time delay between the upstream and downstream signals due to the spacing of the receiver means. A shift register imposes the time delay or delays and the transmission time of the shift register is controlled in response to the product of the signals.

摘要: A correlation system for measuring the velocity of a signal. The principles are applicable to measure the time of flight of any signal. In a specific embodiment, a flowmeter for a fluid stream is described which measures the time of flight of a thermal pulse by correlation of generating and sensing signals. A heater pulse triggers a pulse of controllable duration which controls the polarity of an amplifier connected to a thermal sensor and whose integrated product is utilized to vary the duration of the positive pulse until a null average output is achieved. The control voltage drives a slave multivibrator, the integrated output of which is linearly related to flow and directly indicates the rate of flow of the fluid.

摘要: Apparatus for measuring the flow velocity of fluid within a conduit. Sensing means external to the conduit and responsive to changes in the configuration of the conduit surface upon passage of a vortex and associated with electrical means measure the time interval during which the detectable property of the fluid passes between a plurality of preselected locations on the conduit. Fluid flow is not obstructed by installation of the sensing means. Thus, flow measurements, at a plurality of locations along the conduit can be economically obtained.

摘要: This invention is a flow measuring system using a pair of radiation detectors spaced from one another, and corresponding optical systems for imaging volume elements of a flow stream onto the radiation detectors. In one embodiment, the optical system is disposed to examine two separate volume elements spaced along the line of the flow stream. The radiation detectors provide electrical signals which are then time correlated. In another embodiment, the two optical systems have intersecting fields of view so as to examine a common volume element. One optical system s movable so that one can examine a series of common volume elements along a line substantially normal to the flow stream. The correlation of the signal from the two detectors in the latter embodiment permits measurement of the radiation profile across the flow stream.
