Abstract:
A re-treading method and an apparatus therefor, which are capable of winding a tread material on a base tire automatically and efficiently to realize an adequate joint condition of the leading and trailing edges of the tread material, are configured to take a photograph of a zone of the tread material including its cut position to compare the picture with a stored tread pattern image to detect a deviation amount between them, then moves the tread material or the cut position relative to each other by the deviation amount, next cut the tread material at the cut position after the relative movement, wind the tread material on a base tire, and unite the leading and trailing edges of the tread material. Alternatively, the re-treading method and the apparatus can detect a deviation amount of the position distant by a required tread length from the leading edge of the tread material from a predetermined pattern position near that position planned to be cut, cut the tread material at the at the predetermined position, wind the cut-out tread material on the outer circumference of the base tire while adjusting the length of the tread material by applying thereto a substantially uniform tensile or compressive force, and unite the leading and trailing edges of the tread material wound on the base tire.
Abstract:
An autoclave for retreading and/or repairing pneumatic tires by vulcanization, including a cylindrical container with an opening located at one end provided with a closure element, and a plurality of individual units carrying tires for vulcanization, to each unit there being connected a compressed air source and a vacuum-generating air evacuation source by a series of respective pipes extending between cover portions enclosing each tire and the compressed air and vacuum-generating evacuation sources. The tire-carrying units are movable between a position external to and a position within the container along a runway suspended from the container roof. The pipes being flexible hoses and are connectable to a fixed first connector-half positioned in proximity to a closed end wall of the container, using a movable second connector-half positioned at one of their ends when all the tire-carrying units have been completely inserted into the container.
Abstract:
A process for recapping tires with a pre-molded, pre-vulcanized tread (2) uses a device for measurement of the travelling length of the tread (2). This device includes a stop (5) which moves on a guide track (6) connected to an endless notched belt (7) held in place by two pulleys (8) and (9), a motor (10), and an optical coder (11). During the entire installation phase of the tread (2) on the casing (21), the stop (5) generates a slight force on the free end of the tread placed on a preparation table (3) incorporating rollers (4).
Abstract:
A method and system for retreading tire carcasses (10) with precured treads utilizing time and temperature in conjunction with an envelope pressure system. A precured rubber tread (12), is applied to tire carcass (10) having a cushion gum (16) disposed therebetween. An envelope system is placed over the tread/carcass and this assembly is placed within a pressure chamber. Heat and fluid pressure are then supplied to the chamber. Fluid pressure is then supplied to the chamber after both a predetermined length of time and after a predetermined temperature of the chamber has been reached.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for centering an annular tread on a pneumatic tire-casing is described. The method, preferably put into use with the apparatus, comprises mounting a casing on a wheel, locating the equatorial plane of the casing or wheel, mounting the annular tread on an axially-moveable tread expander assembly, and positioning the tread on the tread expander assembly such that its circumferential center line is located a fixed distance from and parallel to the equatorial plane of the casing or wheel. The distance between the annular tread and the casing or wheel is reduced by an amount equal to the fixed distance so that the annular tread encircles the casing and the circumferential centerline of the tread becomes coincident with the equatorial plane of the casing or wheel.
Abstract:
A process of bonding two bodies of rubber by vulcanization of a connecting layer of vulcanizable rubber provides essentially a new manner of organizing the drainage of gaseous inclusions imprisoned between the bodies and/or resulting from the subsequent vulcanization reaction and of collecting these gases; the gaseous inclusions travel towards at least one conduit which passes through at least one of the two bodies, or else towards dead-end holes provided in one of the faces intended to be bonded.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for installing sidewall replacement members on a used tire carcass by attaching sidewall members to the pre-buffed and cement coated sidewalls of the tire carcass, covering each sidewall member with a flexible sidewall mold, placing a flexible curing envelope around said tire carcass including the sidewall molds and sealing the envelope in the bead area of the tire carcass. The envelope covered tire carcass is then placed in a curing chamber at a preselected temperature and pressures for time period sufficient to cure said sidewall members and bond them on said tire carcass. The sidewall members can be installed in conjunction with the installation of tread rubber on the tire.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for cold retreading or recapping of the running surface of a vehicle tire. A rubber, rope and cloth sectioned mold is produced utilizing a new tire male mold covered with perforated polypropylene film, uncured rubber with nylon rope at its edges and highly stretchable cloth enclosed in an envelope and cured by application of pressure and heat. A male mold is used to make the final female mold directly, or to make an intermediate mold which is used to produce a tread ring that is stretched to form a larger diameter male mold from which a final mold is prepared. The final mold is then sectioned to form one discontinuous section or two or more sections. Conveniently, one section from one size tire may be fitted with a section or sections from other size tires to form a mold to recap a third size tire. Additionally, radial inserts having the radial cross sections of the mold sections may be added to accommodate various tire sizes. The final mold thus produced is then utilized in recapping tires by fitting and fastening its sections and/or inserts around a prepared tire carcass coated with cement, a layer of uncured rubber, and a sheet of perforated polypropylene film. The mold and tire assembly is then enclosed in an envelope and placed in a chamber where curing of the rubber layer is accomplished by inflation of the tire carcass, evacuation of the envelope, pressurization of the chamber and application of heat.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a hub replacement device for use in vehicle tire retreading processes. An envelope (30) is sealed against the tire carcass sidewalls (22, 24) to provide an environmental seal of the new tread (54) on the carcass crown (50) during the vulcanization process. Three arcuate rigid plates (16, 18, 20), each with a pair of ribs (56, 58), are installed between the carcass beads (12, 14), for supporting the beads (12, 14), a predetermined distance apart along a majority of the bead circumference. Integral with each support plate (16, 18, 20) are pairs of opposing toggle clamps (32, 40) with hooked ends (36). A pair of annular discs (26, 28) are located on each side of the tire for applying a compressive force on the envelope (30) against the carcass sidewalls (22, 24). The annular discs (26, 28) are each equipped with pairs of anchor loops (42, 44) to which the hooked ends (36) of the toggle clamps (32,40) are releasably engaged.
Abstract:
A tube assembly for use in a process of vulcanizing a pre-cured tread onto a tire casing is disclosed. The tube assembly includes an elastomeric tubular wall having an inner periphery with a protective non-woven fabric layer covering a major portion thereof. The fabric layer includes a plurality of polyester cords extending in parallel relation in a single ply elastomeric matrix. Longitudinal edges of the fabric are covered by thin strips of elastomer bonded to the fabric layer and the tube wall. Superimposed fabric reinforcing swatches are bonded to the fabric layer around the valve stem. The tube assembly is resistant to being damaged prematurely by the rim which supports the tire casing in the tread vulcanization process.
