A drive system for a railway hopper car discharge gate includes a door panel operated by a rack and pinion drive. The pinion teeth present a substantially cylindrical profile in a plane orthogonal to the axis of pinion rotation. The cylindrical tooth profile substantially prevents the pinion teeth from skipping or walking against the rack teeth when the spacing between the pinion and the door panel and associated rack fluctuates during operation of the discharge gate. Pinion torque is converted into a vertical force at the ends of travel of the door panel to prevent damage to the drive components. A bearing arrangement supports a drive shaft that is operated to rotate the pinions, and minimizes deflection of the shaft when under rotational load. An inertia brake is provided to engage the door panel and prevent it from opening upon a rapid stop of the hopper car as may occur upon impact with an adjacent railway car.

The gate valve assembly includes an operating assembly for movement of a valve member within the gate valve assembly between a first, closed position and a second, open position. A locking mechanism is mounted on the frame assembly to maintain the gate valve assembly in its first closed position when the associated railway car is subjected to large impact forces. The operating assembly includes a lock striker which may be moved longitudinally relative to the valve member to deactivate the locking mechanism while the valve member remains in its closed position. The frame assembly also provides an enhanced seal or barrier to prevent materials from escaping when the gate valve assembly is in its closed position.

A gravity outlet valve (10) is for use on a railway car for discharge of lading from the car. The valve has sloping sidesheets connected together to form sidewalls (12a, 12b) and endwalls (14a, 14b) of the valve. An outlet (O) is defined by the lower end of the sidesheets and endsheets. A gate (16) is located beneath the outlet and is slidably movable from a valve closed to a valve open position. A seal (34) is used for sealing the valve and preventing loss of lading. The seal is a multi-ply seal having an inner core (36) of a spring-like material, and an outer covering (38) of a wear resistant material. The outer covering is contacted by the gate as it moves between its positions. The inner core forces the outer covering into this contact whereby a seal is effected between the outer covering and the gate.

A bottom dump trailer having a trailer body for accepting and hauling load material having a front and rear walls, opposing and parallel side walls and a floor formed by front and rear doors is disclosed. The sides of the front and rear doors are slidably mounted on the side walls of the trailer body so that the doors can slide between the front and rear of the trailer body. In order to dump the load material, a hydraulic cylinder connected between the trailer frame and the rear door slides the rear door from the rear to the front of the trailer body, dumping the load material from the rear of the trailer body. The second hook end of a latch member pivotally attached to the front door hooks to a pin attached to the rear door thereby attaching the front door to the rear door so that the doors may slide in unison between the front and rear of the trailer body. The hydraulic cylinder slides the rear door and the attached front door to the rear of the trailer body, dumping the load material from the front of the trailer body. In order to close the front and rear doors, the hydraulic cylinder slides the rear door and the attached front door to the front of the trailer body where an air cylinder extends a piston rod which engages and rotates the first hook end of the latch member to hook a pin attached to the trailer frame while disengaging the second hook end from the rear door pin thereby preventing the front door from sliding with the rear door. The hydraulic cylinder then slides the rear door to the rear of the trailer body, closing the rear door.

A sliding gate for closing the discharge opening of a hopper having inclined side walls is mounted on elongated low-friction bodies or assemblies secured between the underside of upturned inclined side margins of the gate and the top sides of inclined side walls of a discharge chute secured to the hopper and extending below the discharge opening. The elongated low-friction bodies or assemblies are mounted to create a labyrinth seal by methods which include the use of a plurality of integral stud portions extending through corresponding openings along the inclined side margins of the gate, adhesives, keyways, welding or combinations thereof. The elongated low-friction bodies or assemblies are of a polymeric material such as nylon, Teflon or a composite material like ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene impregnated with molybdenum disulfide. The polymeric low-friction material may be molded to a metal matrix which is mounted on the gate by means of welding. Tapered sealing flaps for engagement with the lower portions of the inclined side walls of the hopper may be included in the low-friction bodies or assemblies.

An outlet gate assembly for application to hoppers of railroad hopper cars that is equipped with a self cleaning rack and gear door plate actuation arrangement, in which the outlet gate assembly includes a frame defined by a pair of spaced apart longitudinal frame members that parallel the path of movement of the door plate and a pair of spaced apart transverse frame members joined together with the longitudinal frame members to define the gate outlet port. The frame members are formed to define shelf portions on which the gate door plate underside rides, with the gate underside being equipped with several sets of self cleaning gear and rack mechanisms that couple the gate operating shaft to the gate door plate. The door plate is formed from an UHMW polymer material of dry self lubricating light weight characteristics and is supported across the midportion of the port by a pair of spaced apart support members in parallel relation across the gate outlet port. The gate assembly is equipped with a gravity operated self locking latch arrangement that holds the door plate in its closed position and also provides for sealing of the gate assembly, when the hopper is loaded, for transit.

At least one door bearing is attached to the outer end of a generally horizontally moving outlet gate. A ramp including an inclined cam surface is located below the inner outlet end wall. U-shaped elastomeric seals extend below the outlet sides and end walls and the lower leg of the seal engages the gate. A transversely extending pinion shaft includes pinions which ride upon the racks in moving between open and closed position. The pinion shaft extends through a slot in the door bearing. The slot is elongated vertically to allow vertical movement of the gate and the door bearing relative to the pinion shaft as the gate is ramped upwardly into closed position and downwardly into open position.

A lock for a railway hopper car gate in which a hopper outlet chute defines a discharge opening with a siding platelike gate operating in the opening. An undercarriage structure having a pair of spaced side frames supports the gate for sliding movement relative the opening. An elongated lock shaft extends between and projects through guide slots formed in both side frames with one of the side frames also being formed with a lock hole. A U-shaped handle is fixed to each end of the lock shaft with each handle having a return leg supported for transverse and pivoting movement relative the side frames. A latching shoulder is fixed to the elongated lock shaft and one of the guide slots is formed with a latching notch. Transverse movement of the lock shaft by operation of either handle effects an engagement of one of the handle return legs into the frame hole to thereby lock the gate. In the lock opening operation, a pivoting movement of the lock shaft within both guide slots followed by a subsequent transverse movement effects the engagement of the shoulder within the locking latch, thereby latching the lock in the unlocked position. A projecting apertured lock flange is integrally formed on each end of the lock shaft, and the adjacent side frame is also formed with a hole, whereby a railway car seal may be passed through an apertured lock flange and the adjacent frame hole, whereby pivoting of the shaft to open the lock automatically breaks the car seal.
