    摘要: A computer downloads rasterized font characters to a connected printer and employs a method which enables a rendering of large character sets by the printer, even though the printer is not designed to internally handle such large character sets. The method enables the computer to control allocations of memory in the printer for storage of font data. Initially, the computer arranges for the printer to allocate an initial portion of memory for storage of font data. A printer driver within the computer then analyzes data segments to be sent to the printer to determine if a respective data segment is text-related data; graphics-related data or raster data. If it is determined that text-related data is to be sent to the printer, it is next determined if the printer stores font data to enable a printing of a character designated by a current character-defining data segment. If the printer does not store the necessary character, the method causes, if necessary, the printer to allocate further memory for storage of the additional font data to be supplied by the computer. The computer further controls the printer to revise the portion of memory allocated for the storage of font data, if either graphics-related data or raster data is being sent to the printer.

    摘要: Font character data is maintained in a cache memory in bit map form. Each character is identified a unique identifier (ID) value. The printer searches the cache memory only by ID value to determine the presence of a character in the cache. Pointer tables are avoided. A list is maintained of characters recently employed by the printer and is arranged so as to enable determination of a ranking of usage among the listed characters in cache. When a new character is requested by the printer, the cache is initially searched to determine if the character is present therein. If the character is found, it is immediately accessed and its identifier is placed at the head of the usage list. Other characters are pushed down in the list. The least recently used character in the list (at the list's bottom) is removed unless it is being employed in a print action, in which case, a next higher character in the list is examined to determine if it should be removed based upon both usage criteria and requirement for a page being processed.

    摘要: An output device is enabled to obtain character descriptions for use in raster scanning characters which belong to a common character font. Character descriptions are stored in an external device which is linked to the output device by a communication channel. Character codes are received at the output device which identify characters to be outputted. A raster image of the characters to be outputted is set up. In the course of setting up the raster image, information corresponding to the character codes is sent from the output device to the external device via the communication channel. In response to the character codes sent from the printer to the external device, corresponding character descriptions are sent from the external device to the output device via the communication channel.

    摘要: Because laser printers are capable of rendering only a maximum number of characters per unit time, pervious printer would pre-render the entire page prior to print the page. This pre-rendering process greatly increases the memory requirements. To overcome this problem, there is provided a method for reducing memory requirements in a laser printer when printing a page of characters. First, the page is divided into a series of strips. Next, the entire page is scanned strip by strip for any strips that contain an excess number of characters, where the excess number is that number of character that exceeds the maximum number the printer can render in the given time. Assuming a complex strip is found, any common characters in the complex strips are prerendered. If, after pre-rendering the common characters any strip is still complex, then the excess characters are pre-rendered. Finally, each character in a strip is rendered when the printer is ready to print that strip, if any character in the strip was pre-rendered then it is retrieved from memory. Thus, the present invention renders many of the characters while the page is being exposed. Therefore, the printer can start the exposure process sooner and with significantly lower memory requirements.
