A variable geometry coil system includes a single fixed horizontal coil and a vertically oriented pair of movable coils interconnected through an electronic matrix to allow for a multi-mode system which enables either the vertical pair or the horizontal coil to function alone or to enable a quadrature combination of the coils for optimum signal performance. The vertical coil pair includes two matched coils which are loaded to reduce their tuning sharpness so as to eliminate the need for clinical tuning prior to utilization. Signal losses incurred by the Q reduction are compensated for by including an integrated preamplifier at the signal output.

A quadrature coil system which includes the following elements. (1) First and second electric main conductors which are situated at a distance from one another in a first plane and a second plane, respectively, and each of which is formed as a loop with an opening, the main conductors having mainly the same orientation. (2) First and second connection conductors, each of which constitutes an electric connection between the free ends of the first and second main conductors, which free ends are situated to corresponding sides of the opening. Four QD surface coil assemblies each constituted by an 8-shaped coil and a rectangular coil are one-dimensionally arranged under the spine array of a patient in the direction of the body axis of the patient. Each 8-shaped coil senses an RF magnetic field in an x direction near the spine array of the patient, and each rectangular coil senses an RF magnetic field in a y direction. Outputs from the 8-shaped coils and the rectangular coils are input to 90.degree. hybrid combiner circuits through pre-amplifiers, the phase of any one of the outputs is shifted by 90.degree., and then the outputs are added to each other. Outputs from the 90.degree. hybrid combiner circuits are supplied as raw data, through receiver/data acquisition systems, to a data processing unit (computer). In the data processing unit, raw data are two-dimensionally Fourier-transformed to form image signals p.sub.i (x,y,z) (i=1 to 4). The signals p.sub.1 (x,y,z) are squared, the sum of p.sub.i (x,y,z) is calculated with respect to i, and finally, the square root of the sum is calculated to obtain an image.

A local antenna for transmitting and/or receiving radio frequency signals in a nuclear magnetic resonance imaging apparatus includes first and second sub-antennas which are axially spaced from each other. The sub-antennas each are composed of at least one conductor turn. An electrical series circuit is formed of the first sub-antenna, a capacitive element for shortening the path length effective for the radio frequency signal and of the second sub-antenna. The two sub-antennas have the same winding direction. A capacitor is connected in parallel with the series circuit. The respective capacitance values of the series capacitive element and the parallel capacitor are approximately the same. For constructing a local antenna system especially suitable for mammography, two such local antennas are arranged side-by-side and are electrically connected in parallel. The series capacitive elements of the two local antennas face each other.

A magnetic resonance probe coil is fabricated using a superconductive material for the coil. Three distinct embodiments are described: a single-layer coil with no crossovers; a dual-film coil wherein the capacitors are formed through an intermediate dielectric layer; a single-layer coil incorporating a superconducting crossover. All of the embodiments are designed to take advantage of the properties of the superconducting material to achieve very high quality factors (Q) of tens of thousands to over a million. The superconductor is patterned into a spiral design to achieve self-resonance at a desired frequency in the range of 1 to 1000 MHz and the device operates at temperatures higher than 30 K. A broadband matching network is also disclosed which, when operated in conjunction with the superconducting magnetic resonance probe coil, allows operation over a wide range of frequencies while maintaining extremely low loss.

A local antenna system for generating and receiving circularly-polarized, high-frequency magnetic fields in a nuclear magnetic resonance imaging apparatus has two coil groups disposed to define an examination volume therebetween, with each coil group having two coils therein, with each coil having a middle axis disposed at an angle substantially less than 90.degree. relative to the middle axis of the other coil in that group. The coil groups are disposed relative to the examination volume so that each coil in a coil group has a diagonally disposed counterpart coil in the other coil group. When the diagonally coils are respectively fed with currents which are phase-shifted by 90.degree. relative to each other, they respectively generate circularly-polarized high-frequency magnetic fields in the examination volume which are in-phase. In a reception mode, the signals induced in the diagonally disposed coils are superimposed in-phase.
