Another light beam is used for servo. Converging of light during recording or read of a multilayer recording medium is performed with higher precision than in the prior art, so higher density, higher capacity recording/playback can be performed.

A detection of a spherical aberration and a detection of a coma aberration in a radial direction are simultaneously performed, and the coma aberration generated with the offset of an objective lens 109 is corrected in real time, thus enlarging an allowable offset amount of the objective lens. In order to simultaneously detect the spherical aberration and the coma aberration, focal shift and tracking shift signals in an inside region and outside region of reflected light flux are detected respectively, and the differential signals are set as spherical aberration and coma aberration signals.

In the past there has been a problem that on a detection surface the influence of interference causes a defocusing signal to degrade, narrowing the range in which spherical aberration can be stably detected. Accordingly, a diffraction grating is used to focus the inner and outer sides of luminous flux on separate optical detectors before the optical flux is focused on an optical detector and defocusing signals are independently calculated to find the difference therebetween, thereby providing a spherical aberration signal. This makes it possible to detect spherical aberation signals more stably.

Disclosed here is a method for solving a conventional problem that no spherical aberration signal can be detected from any push-pull signal that is easy to adjust an object photodetector when a differential push-pull signal is obtained. To achieve the above object, sub-beams used to detect a differential push-pull signal are defocused from the main beam and spherical aberration signals are detected and the compensation of the spherical aberration is started while tracking controlling is off and detection of spherical aberration signals is held while the tracking controlling is on. The present invention can thus obtain both of the spherical aberration signal and the differential push-pull signal at the same time with use of the conventional detection system.

An optical detection system splits the plurality of reflected light beams and detects the split reflected light beams. An electrical circuit provides a focus error signal of the at least one focused spot and a tracking error signal from the plurality of reflected light beams. The electrical circuit adds focus error signals provides a difference signal between the focus error signals, amplifies tracking error signals with a gain, and obtains a difference between amplified tracking error.

The medium-power component of the modulated light forms a crystallizing temperature area on the recording layer. A recording-reproducing apparatus can remarkably relax the reproduction tracking accuracy by use of a head wider than the track width. The carrier signal frequency assigned to a recording track is designated to a synthesized signal generator. In compliance with this designation, the synthesized signal generator generates a signal of the designated frequency. This carrier signal is amplitude-modulated by the baseband signal to be recorded in a mixer. The unrequired frequency components are removed from this modulation signal by a bandpass filter, and the resulting signal is recorded in a recording medium by a head. The recording medium and the head are in relative motion. In read mode, a track is specified by the carrier signal.
