A registration system suited to use in an imaging system, such as an inkjet printer, includes a first measuring device, such as an encoder, which provides information for monitoring a speed of a moving image receiving surface of the imaging system, such as a paper web. A second measuring device, such as a second encoder or a tension measuring device, provides information for monitoring a tension in the image receiving surface. A control system determines an actuation time for one of two marking stations, based on the information from the first and second measuring devices. This enables a registration of images applied to the image receiving surface by the two marking stations to take into account both changes in speed of the web and changes in tension in the web.

What is disclosed is a system and method for minimizing the Inter-Document Zone (IDZ) in printing system architectures with print engines running at constant speed. The asymmetric IDZ precession disclosed herein is intended for those multi-pass systems where there is a difference in required start and stop durations of various transition subsystems such as transfer engagement and disengagement processes. This mode reduces the required inter-document zone region by shifting the zone in accordance with asymmetric timing of start and stop times of processes that must occur during this time. Advantageously, productivity gains are effectuated without altering process speeds.

An ink jet printer has an intermediate transfer drum that rotates past a print head and a downstream transfixing station. The surface of the drum is coated with a release agent. The print head ejects ink droplets onto the coated drum surface to form images thereon. The images are identified for either simplex prints or duplex prints. The transfixing station has separate simplex and duplex operating modes. A movable transfixing roll at the transfixing station is moved into and out of contact with the drum to form a periodic transfixing nip. The nip is formed with separate timing relationships with the approach of the leading and trailing edge of a transported recording medium and the approach of the image on the drum surface, depending upon whether a simplex or duplex print is to be transfixed by the nip.

Methods of and apparatus for compensating electrostatic printing process stations for residual toner voltage. A toner patch is produced on a photoreceptor. That toner patch and a section of the untoned photoreceptor are then charged and exposed so as to produce a first latent image. The residual voltage between the exposed toner patch and the exposed section of the untoned photoreceptor is then determined. At least one processing station is then adjusted to compensate for the determined residual toner voltage. Process stations which can be adjusted include development stations, exposure stations and charging stations.

In a multi-color imaging apparatus utilizing a recharge step between two image creation steps, a corona generating device is used to recharge the developed image areas and untoned areas of a charge retentive surface to a lower electrical potential than that associated with the developed image areas before recharge, so that the residual voltage associated with the developed image is substantially reduced and a minimal level of negative charge is driven through the toner layer(s). An electrical charge associated with any previously developed images is substantially neutralized prior to development of any subsequent images thereon.
