Abstract: A system and method for operating a high dynamic range analog front-end receiver for long range LIDAR with a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) include a clipping circuit to prevent saturation of the TIA. The output of the clipping circuit is connected via a diode or transistor to the input of the TIA and regulated such that the input voltage of the TIA remains close to or is only slightly above the saturation threshold voltage of the TIA. The regulation of the input voltage of the TIA can be improved by connecting a limiting resistor in series with the diode or transistor. A second clipping circuit capable of dissipating higher input currents and thus higher voltages may be connected in parallel with the first clipping circuit. A resistive element may be placed between the first and second clipping circuits to further limit the input current to the TIA.

Abstract: Various examples are directed to a digital predistortion (DPD) circuit comprising a DPD actuator circuit, a DPD feedback frequency-shaping filter, a basis matrix generator circuit, a basis matrix frequency-shaping filter, and a DPD adaption circuit. The DPD actuator circuit may generate a predistorted signal based at least in part on an input signal and a set of frequency-shaped DPD parameters. The DPD feedback frequency-shaping filter may filter a DPD feedback signal to generate a frequency-shaped DPD feedback signal. A passband of the DPD feedback frequency-shaping filter may include substantially all of a bandwidth of the input signal and exclude a distortion term outside the bandwidth of the input signal. The basis matrix generator may generate a basis matrix based at least in part on a power amplifier feedback signal The basis matrix frequency-shaping filter may generate a frequency-shaped basis matrix based at least in part on the basis matrix. The DPD adaption circuit may be configured to generate the set of frequency-shaped DPD parameters based at least in part on the frequency-shaped basis matrix and the frequency-shaped DPD feedback signal.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for compensating gain of a combined amplifier and analog-to-digital converter (ADC) circuit, for example, due to additional filtering added to an input of the circuit. In an example, an integrated circuit including an amplifier and ADC can include an amplifier circuit configured to receive an input signal and to amplify the input signal based on an input resistance and a feedback resistance, and to provide an amplified representation of the input signal, and an ADC circuit configured to receive an output of the amplifier, to determine a digital coefficient associated with an additional input resistance coupled to the amplifier, and to provide a compensated digital representation of the amplified representation of the input signal using the digital compensation coefficient.

Using various techniques described, the acquisition, bit-trial, and residue charge transfer phases of two or more digital-to-analog converter (DAC) circuits of an ADC circuit can be time-interleaved. The use of two or more DAC circuits can increase or maximize the time available for the acquisition, bit-trial, and residue charge transfer phases.

Abstract: A lidar system can be used to measure a distance to one or more objects in a target region, such as by transmitting light towards the target and then receiving light reflected or scattered from the target. Received light can be stored as charge on storage elements such as capacitors, where received light can be stored on different storage elements depending on a time of arrival of the received light. A reduction in the number of storage elements can be achieved by providing one or more groups of storage elements, where each group of storage elements can correspond to a digit of a time of flight, where the time of flight can be round trip travel time of a light beam travelling from the lidar system to the target region and then back to the lidar system. Each group of storage elements can be arranged in a binary tree of a decimal tree configuration. Additionally, a time of activation of each of the storage elements can be increased with an increasing time of flight, such as to compensate for a decreased strength of the received light as the time of flight increases.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to data communication networks. An example data communication apparatus includes physical (PHY) layer circuitry that includes transceiver circuitry, decoder circuitry, and a signal analysis unit. The transceiver circuitry receives encoded data symbols via a network link. The received encoded data symbols are encoded using trellis coded modulation (TCM). The decoder circuitry decodes the received encoded data symbols using maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding to map a received symbol sequence to an allowed symbol sequence using a trace-back depth. A trace-back depth value is a number of symbols in the received symbol sequence used by the ML decoding to identify the allowed symbol sequence from the received symbol sequence. The signal analysis unit determines one or more link statistics of the network link, and sets the trace-back depth value according to the one or more link statistics.

Abstract: Magnetic sensors may be positioned around an opening for a wire to measure the current flowing through the wire. A non-symmetric positioning of the sensors around the target measurement zone can enable an expanded measurement zone compared to conventional current measurement devices. Further, some sensors may be paired such that a hypothetical line connecting the sensors is tangential to the target measurement zone. Other sensors may be paired such that a hypothetical line between the sensors crosses the target measurement zone. The different pairs of the sensors can enable a reduction in the impact of stray field interference on the measurement of the current flowing through the wire.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to various methods and example systems for carrying out analog-to-digital conversion of data acquired by arrays of nanogap sensors. The nanogap sensors described herein may operate as molecular sensors to help identify chemical species through electrical measurements using at least a pair of electrodes separated by a nanogap. In general, the methods and systems proposed herein rely on digitizing the signal as the signal is being integrated, and then integrating the digitized results. With such methods, the higher sample rate used in the digitizer reduces the charge per quantization and, therefore, the size of sampling capacitors used. Consequently, sampling capacitors may be made factors of magnitude smaller, requiring less valuable space on a chip compared to sampling capacitors used in conventional nanogap sensor arrays.

Abstract: A BAW gyroscope is configured to operate with two pairs of orthogonal modes instead of a single pair in order to mitigate the impact of changes in gaps (e.g., introduced from external stresses such as thermal gradients, external shocks, mechanical stress/torque, etc.). Specifically, the BAW gyroscope resonator is configured to be simultaneously driven to resonate with a two disparate resonant modes (referred to herein as the “fundamental” mode and the “compound” mode), with the same set of drive electrodes used to drive both resonant modes (i.e., all of the drive electrodes are used to drive the two drive modes). When the sensor experiences external rotation, energy couples from the driven modes of vibration to two corresponding orthogonal sense modes via the Coriolis force. The same set of sense electrodes is used to sense both sense modes (i.e., all of the sense electrodes are used to sense the two sense modes). The fundamental mode is differential with respect to the electrodes, while the compound mode is seen as common-mode with respect to the electrodes. Thus, differential gap change will impact offset of rate measured with the fundamental mode only, while common-mode gap change will impact offset of rate measured with the compound mode only.
