Abstract:
An adaptive receiver to provide reliable estimates of the symbols for the high-order MQAM and MPSK modulated signals received in the presence of amplitude fading and phase dynamics induced due to time-varying atmospheric or terrestrial multipath fading encountered in wireless communication channels. The adaptive receiver encompasses an adaptive tracking loop comprised of adaptive channel fade envelope estimator derived from the high-order modulated signal, a novel phase detector to separately estimate the phase due to the fading channel and the reference oscillator from that due to the data modulation present in the received signal without the need of any pilot symbol or pilot carrier, and a Kalman filter, a fixed-lag smoother and a smoothed symbol detector.

The present invention relates in general to portable processor based devices that provide computing, communication or entertainment functionality. More particularly, the present invention pertains to portable processor based devices operable while being held in its user's hand and providing communications, organizer and/or entertainment functions, such as cellular telephones, palm-sized organizers, and MP3 players, and to portable processor based devices providing general computing capabilities, such as laptop or handheld personal computers (PC's). More specifically, the present invention relates to systems that detachably mate a plurality of portable processor based devices to provide their combined functionality in an integrated structure.
Abstract:
A system for receiving and handling a scrambled input data signal that includes a preamble with a start of frame delimiter (SFD) initiates an SFD search on the scrambled input data, thereby attempting to save an initialization period. The initialization period may be of the order of 7 uS, and its saving results in improved timeline management enabling antenna diversity and the possible use of high performance algorithms. The system may use two parallel paths for signal processing, each having an SFD detector and a descrambler. If the detected SFD is short, then the second path is disabled, and if it is long, then the first parallel path is disabled. Alternatively, the first path can be used for a finite period of time (for e.g., 40 symbols) and if the SFD is still not detected, the first path is disabled, and the system uses only the second path.
Abstract:
A power controller in a communication system adjusts the transmitted power level using adaptive prediction of channel fading for maintaining the power level for improved communications by using an adaptive nonlinear predictor that explicitly takes into account the propagation delay and channel fading where the transmitted power is determined on the basis of the measurement of the received power levels over the individual diversity branches for providing communication through a fading channel with effective performance equivalent to that of a channel without any signal fading.
